Given this several more spins after these recent bumps, and can confirm it's still the best black metal album ever made

So I have a theory about the lyrical themes of the album.

Each song seems to be very different from each other - such as 50 Forts Along The Rhine being very descriptive of European landscapes around the Rhine river and Blood Vaults describing the hiding of abborent acts under the diguise of sanctity.

The title 'Rain Of The Impure' I think is the theme of the album. It describes a series of circumstances by which we as humans view something as unfallable and the lyrics look at these situations as our perception of unfallability's weakness is hidden from the general public in plain view.

The album ends as a piece tying it all together - essentially saying: how can you call someone a sinner when your acts of good are essentially sin themselves?

That's a very good reading. I think Soil of the Incestuous implicates the same thing in that the speaker is both the hero and the villain. Religion always provides the illusion of righteousness and people seldom realize the saint and the sinner are two sides of the same coin. This album just emanates atmosphere. Just the thought of it gives me gooseflesh.

I remember this album being such a unique listen when it dropped, you could definitely see its impact on the genre in the following years and it's held up really well over the years. Stoked to hear their next one.
