Disc 2 has some choice cuts, and Hand. Cannot. Erase. at least tops this, maybe not his others.

I think I've grown to love disc 1 a lot. If it were on its own, it would be a 4.5

This is a great release but contains too much filler, especially with the electronic and industrial material. It's missing a lot of that PT magic that all their other releases has, besides maybe Sunday, but even that had some fantastic moments.

I dunno, the moodiness and atmosphere is pretty PT esque and in my mind highlights how PT very much differs to simply Steven Wilson. It's also that same moodiness that gives this its charm

HCE is the only one of his solo albums that has that moodiness and charm similar to PT, which is why I like it most out of all his solo work, but for the most part agreed. This does have some PT magic, but as a whole doesn't have as much weight and creativity behind it as the previous three did. Certainly nothing here comes close to the amazingness of Arriving Somewhere or Fear of a Blank Planet's first few songs, at least for me.

Disc 1's structure is interesting and refreshing, but I feel with this change in structure came a lesser will for elaboration and both emotional and musical build-up, which were two strong characteristics of PT's sound in my opinion.

I like seeing this as a sort of experiment in progression and variations around specific musical themes though, because there actually is many interesting, but under-developed, ideas. But it mostly succeeds, I think, at what it's trying to do: the progression from Occam's Razor to Yellow Windows, especially, is remarkable.

I have a feeling that if PT continued it would've gone more downhill, it was clear Wilson wanted to change musical direction around this time. Going from Blank Planet to Insurgentes to this each year makes that pretty clear looking back.

Yeah, and there wasn't much of the PT identity left in Grace for Drowning, but it's an absolutely amazing record especially because of the jazzier and more outright progressive tendencies it brought to his palette

I'm probably in the minority here but I actually consider Insurgentes better than the two records that followed, as great as they were.

I love Insurgentes, but I find it slightly less consistent than all his other solo records. But even though a few songs are lackluster, the atmosphere is constantly great and crushing, and there's some stunning tracks.

But I think it would have been fruitless to keep exploring this noisier side.

His first two albums are much more interesting than the next two

Insurgentes is probably his most interesting solo album but HCE is my favorite.

That's probably his most linear and the one I've listened to the least. SW has turned on the autopilot it seems. But after such a lengthy and diverse career its not surprising. Wish he would do a new no-man album

Wilson gets boring as hell real soon for me, Stupid Dream and In Absentia are excellent albums though, from what I recall at least.

Drawing The Line sucks hard, but Time Flies is probably one of their best songs.

Album is hit or miss for me, a handful of great tracks for sure though.
