I'm halfway through first listen and insanely impressed by the progression and musicianship but that mix is really something ugly

No indeed that Palms mix was REALLY ugly

Although I think it was more the mastering than the mixing. Music that dynamic shouldn't be brickwalled to shit. Thankfully this hasn't but I still think Nick Didia did a mediocre job

My problem with the mix on this is the volume disparity. I know that's supposed to be a good thing, but when I can't even hear the intro, turn it up, and then gets blown away when it gets louder it's fucking annoying

Yeah it reminds me of that Waves EP I heard a while back. You throw it up to hear that practically silent intro then you get blown away with some ridiculous riff, but it's not pleasant it's just jarring and uncomfortable

Should've got Forrester back. His production is stellar.

Sky Machine does this and it pisses me off.
"I have no idea why. Out of curiosity, I downloaded this album after reading the review, and it's
phenomenal. A.M. War, Eidolon, and We Are are fucking phenomenal."
Welcome to the club. Now go and listen to Sound Awake immediately. It's even better than this.

Trent Reznor called and said give the downward spiral a listen...

Without question, Forrester is fantastic for this band. In general, he's a bit of a homogenous producer, most of the bands he produces can sound a little too polished and lifeless. But, for Karnivool, it's a match made in heaven.

I was just listening to that before on my new Studio Monitors. It's a beautiful, sprawling piece of work. Some genius panning and EQ'ing going on there.

I don't know dude, it's early days. I hated Sound Awake when I first heard it, now it's one of my favourites. Let this one grow

I like the sound these guys are going for, still needs a few more spins.

Yea idk why everyone is complaining about the production. It's not the best, but it doesn't have to be to be a solid record. Idk that's just me though.

Oh man I agree...but the quiet to loud is intense.

Yeah but it's just frustrating coming off Sound Awake, which was masterfully produced imo. And sure, you can get away with below par production if you're the White Stripes or if you're just doing the simple guitar, drums, bass, vocals, but if you're layers and overdubs galore like these guys, well that style just begs clean and sharp production, which this doesn't really have.

Like the end of Hurt... ouch
