even conceptually that would completely contradict the point of the album

i think what i meant by 'subdued' is that the production is pretty void of an edge. the tempos and arrangements are energetic but it lacks the engaging texture that runs through his earlier work or the aggression here

i have to disagree i feel that the textures are amplified to the point of utter nonsense on this one, i will agree on it being less aggressive than this though but i think thats pretty self-evident considering the direction of the album.

although the few tracks that do come off as subdued compared to the rest of the album are the best songs by far so i do wish it was moreso

hmm i'll have to relisten. i was jamming it as i fell asleep and for some reason i didn't find it very bombastic. i was planning on giving it a relisten today anyway

when i think of my favorite baths textures i think of stuff like turian courtship and starlit everglades - that vinyl-ish comforting hiss, which seems to be completely absent on the new one. it reminds me more of the glossy stuff coming out of pc music and the like

"that vinyl-ish comforting hiss, which seems to be completely absent on the new one."

ah i see what you are getting at. i do hear these qualities in many of the songs though, they just seem to be a little less apparent when the instrumentals go really bombastic.

and i think his percussion still has its distinct textures as well

mmhmm, i see what you're saying.

not the biggest fan of his voice - mostly because it seems locked in one over-the-top style for the majority of the tracks - but it's not enough to drive me away from the new one. though something tells me it's not going to be a listen that is especially rewarded by multiple listens

the more i read of what you're saying the more i feel like this is one of those albums i thought was transcendent on first listen bc i was super sleepy and then i listen to it later and it's a completely different, altogether ordinary/bad album

"not the biggest fan of his voice - mostly because it seems locked in one over-the-top style for the majority of the tracks "

my biggest gripe. he used to be really good at these whimsical, minimal, easily memorizable hooks, which show up occasionally on here but are mostly drowned out by some of the most nonsensical and agitating vocals of his career.

i cant say i didnt see it coming tho. he started treading into that territory a bit on Obsidian here and there and those were the lows of the album.

listening to music when ur sleepy can totally completely change the impact i find, for better or worse.

i still think the new album is 'good', its just not the direction i personally wanted. but who really cares what i want, seems like his major demograph for the album finds it very personal and relatable and thats dope for them.

i think my favorite baths material is mostly stacked on the first half of pop songs/false b-sides, what do you usually go back to in his catalog?

but yeah i think there are enough relatable albums for straight white dudes that we can let a gay dude make an album really relatable for other gay dudes.

yeah i'd say mine is similar but flip cerulean and b-sides, which took over my life for several months when i found it despite actively disliking most fot the record's back half

i'm not having much luck finding music from this year i really connect to. oh well
