I take it this was a wise decision in starting here with these guys? I think it’ll work out. Intimidating discog though, that’s a lot of releases, especially when you include all the EPs etc.

Well, either this or Dum Spiro Spero.

just listen to this, DSS and Arche
you can try all the other stuff if you really want more afterwards

Yeah, well I thought the benefit of starting here was that it’s not only their most heralded release (at least on this site), but that the next two are also highly rated so I can potentially move forward from here, at least in the first instance.
Edit: this was actually a reply to Pika, but works well after what you said Shadow.

how many ratings does an album need to show up on the all-time ratings list? the thought of this being at/near the top has amused me for a few days now

Loads of people probably checked this version but rated the other one, it might lower the overall average a little if they’d rated the correct one, but it’d have more total votes. I know this is just speculation, but the band page is long & I doubt many people scroll all the way down to ‘compilations’.

@Demon: I think the Unraveling with Macabre as the final track (that's in the deluxe version only) is their best work in studio, so I wouldn't forget that either. Give Gauze a try too if you want something drastically different. Also, the EP section on this site for some reason included all singles they ever made, the only actual EP's there is Unraveling is Missa.
@Shadowmire: Remasters are in the compilations section, which are not eligible for the all-time ratings list.
|
| |
that's a shame. at least great albums like Beethoven's ninth are eligible

@Demon: This is a very fitting starting point. It might be a bit intimidating, as in, many songs that change things up often, but that's the case with the subsequent albums as well, so it's something to embrace when it comes to DEG. Also, I'm a living proof for what you said about this album's ratings. Have it 5'd, but the LP entry.
@Calculating: Six Ugly also, or did I miss something and it's not actually considered an EP?

Derp I forgot Six Ugly, thanks.

@Rik: it’s ok, I don’t feel intimidated, I’m more intrigued than anything. I will definitely be giving this another shot soon. Thanks for the advice everyone.

dir en greys got an awesome discography, i'd rec going thru the pvideos and maybe checking out a live dvd or two. i own the reg edition of uroboros annnnd i still rock it more than the remaster, less depth and the growls are lower buuut i wouldnt say the production/mixing ruined the album.

Love this and it’s probably their best work.
DSS is one of the most unhinged albums ever though.

Vulgar should deserve an honorable mention as well, as it’s probably their most consistent album pre-Six Ugly.

I'm personally not the biggest fan of the album itself although Mode Vulgar is probably the show I like to watch most by these guys nowadays, amazing top to bottom with some of the most energy they ever had.
