Specifically what? Maybe I'm wrongly associating his quote with stuff I've heard otherwise (like from blawan), but I do think that idea of calling something bass music because it doesn't fit into dubstep is still wrong because there's always at least a genre it fits into better (garage, house, etc.), where bass music is just a very unhelpful blanket term. I also think that saying someone shouldn't be called dubstep because that's not "what they're pushing" or what they "want to be tagged with" is wrong. Which isn't necessarily contradictory to what you're saying, just an elaboration on my initial point even if I'm wrong in analysing Skream's intentions.

No I totally agree with you about substituting "bass music' for dubstep (or any other of its recent relatives), which is half the reason why terms like that and "post dubstep' (obligatory lol post dubstep remark) annoy me. As a way of describing musical trends (the huge rise in bass heavy music in the UK, and what comes in next in the wake of such a successful and influential sound like dubstep (hence post dubstep)) then that's fine, but using it as an actual genre descriptor is pointless and absent of any kind of knowledge to anyone remotely outside of the scene. To say that such and such artist makes post dubstep, or that this is a "bass music" album raises far more questions than it answers

As for the rest of your post, Skream was kind've taken out of context. Him saying that they weren't and shouldn't be labelled as dubstep was simply because they weren't making dubstep

Who was he talking about though? I absolutely have no idea so I'm not trying to imply that he was wrong in any way at this point, it's just that I figured his comment was along the lines of Blawan's, just trying to distance himself and some fellow artists from the dubstep term because they didn't like being pigeon-holed into it.

If you could read I just said it wasn't

The album that I'm digging at the moment, Dev. Check it out.

Heard it and really didn't like it. It's ambient crossed with drone based rhythmic noise

Nah dubstep itself can totally be atmospheric. I think what people typically tag as post-dubstep IS dubstep that's on the more atmospheric end, like clubroot, swarms, or even burial (I see the latter all too often). A lot of the time it's on the more garage-like side of dubstep, but something being atmospheric doesn't make it a new genre, you know?

TM: he was talking about guys like Jackmaster, some of the Night Slugs crew, essentially the new breed of garage and acid house

oh, well i thought it was in the same vein as post-rock, post-metal, etc but dubstep is already a subgenre itself so that would just be tedious. thanks
