Yeah, Boggy Depot isn't very much of an AiC record. I'd say Degradation Trip is more AiC-esque

"Not to mention the fact that he was the face, and the soul, of aic."
Face, maybe. Soul, highly debatable. That sort of frontman-centric reductionism means that all bands are merely vehicles for the lead singer. While that may be true to some extent, it's less true of AiC than most. Staley was an integral part of the band, no doubt. But he was not the be-all and end-all of the band.
Also, the original statement about Cantrell's solo stuff was in regards to how I consider it to be as good or better than tripod.

"how so?"
Because of the fact that Cantrell is/was the primary songwriter and shared frontman duties.

ok true, but my feeling has always been that, although I'm aware of JC's contribution to the band (remember I'm the guy who said that AiC is the JC Project without Layne) Layne's vulnerability in vocal delivery, lyrics and on stage personality has always been what I find to be most emotionally evocative. Jerry's voice and guitar work is a close second, but the magic created between them is what makes the whole greater than the parts, which is AiC.

Well, Robby Krieger was the primary songwriter for The Doors. Morrison's musical contributions to his band were no greater
than Layne's. Does that mean that Krieger was more important or essential to the band than Morrison was?

I agree completely. AiC wouldn't have been nearly as great a band without Staley, and they probably will never be again, but I'm not offended by the fact that they're still using the name and recording under the same name and I don't really get why other people are. To me they're still AiC the same way AC/DC was still AC/DC after Bon Scott died and (to a lesser extent) Van Halen were Van Halen after Roth left. (but seriously, Sammy Hagar sucks)
