SH1 is a pretty great game, especially for its time - I haven't gotten around to the others yet though, but I was always under the impression it went downhill after SH2?

4 is definitely a love it or hate it game, but it's so creative and enjoyable for me.

The little nuances you notice in the apartment throughout the game is crazy, so much depth for a game at that time.

nah, went downhill after 4 when the original team silent disbanded. sh3 is a must-play for any fans of 2, Heather is the best sh protagonist imo. the game has a lot more lore involving sh, whereas 2 is a smaller more intimate story about James and not really the town at large. 2's plot is very different than the rest of the sh games. 3 is much better than 2 in almost every way except for the plot is less engaging and impactful in some ways. In 3 the visuals, monster designs, environments, etc are all the best I've ever seen in any game. I think some people just don't like that the protagonist is a teenage girl and the plot essentially parallels Harry's experience of the town in sh1. I think sh2 is also a little easier to understand for people not familiar with all the lore of sh since it's not really about the town as much. 2 re-uses a limited amount of monster designs a lot but people don't really seem to notice. 4 is definitely love or hate but I think it's a masterpiece, one of the most unique gaming experiences out there. Origins is still a fantastic game, better than most, but it's still a decline from the original 4 which are all golden.

SH4 is the only one that truly scared me as well.

silent hill 4 is fantastic, right up there with 3. 2 is the crowning jewel, and 1 was highly influential but easily the weakest of the 4 now

yeah 4 is really great, it's got some scares that you won't find in any other game. the apartment stuff is really cool, the monsters are freaky, and it's fascinating that the main focus of the plot is on the psychopath villain rather than the main character, who we know almost nothing about. I don't fuck with the ghosts, gotta run away as fast as possible. I did pin cynthia though, her ghost looks incredible, it's pretty scary the way she crawls on the ground. I'm glad 4 gets more love now than it used to

the hospital and jail levels were so well done. so many scares. that giant eye and the large 2 headed baby things that walk on their hands were so creepy

yeah that water jail is something else, very unique design. the 'twin victim' monster is definitely one of the scariest when you encounter it for the first time. if you don't attack them they'll point and whisper at you

People finally coming around on 4 but 1 is falling behind in appreciation is so weird. The fact that it exists on PS1 is a marvel in ingenuity and creativity in and of itself, never mind how brutal the imagery is. Still easily a 4.5 / 5 for me, if only because the controls are obviously clunky even in an era of clunky controls.

Man, reading all this talk makes me want to play them again so fucking much. Have anyone played them recently, how did they age?

Silent Hill is still scary but the controls and graphics take some getting used to.

Silent Hill 2 never ages. Brilliant video game. Silent Hill 3 hasn't aged either.

Silent Hill 4 controls clunky and the enemies can be more annoying than scary.

Everything after that is frustrating to play.

i agree silent hill 1 is majorly influential and was a masterpiece for its time, but i recently went through games 1-4 and 1 was far and away the weakest of the experience, despite still being better than most ps1 games are by today's standards.

have you guys ever played condemned: criminal origins
it doesn't have the masterful artistry/storytelling of SH2
BUT as a horror adventure type game it's pretty flippin' scary at parts. especially if mannequins freak you out
