First thing I noticed was that the kick drum sounded weak. But later on I felt like the whole kit sounded flat.

Whispered: I wasn't at ProgPower, so I'm unfortunately behind on Haken. Definitely want to hear it, though.
For those wanting to come to a final decision on Mangini's performance, if you know anything about drumming, air drum and see how much fun you have.

Somebody on the Mike Portnoy forums pointed out that almost all of the songs on this record have the same general structures as the tracks from I&W.
On the Backs of Angels – Pull me Under
Lost Not Forgotten – Under a Glass Moon
This is the Life – Another Day
Far from Heaven / Breaking All Illusions – Wait for Sleep / Learning to Live
Outcry – Metropolis Part 1

I like their wanking, thank you.
Will admit it does seem out of place sometimes but not nearly as bad as half you guys make it out to
be.

Have they released the instrumentals like previous album? Can't stand Labrie's voice anymore and the lyrics are awful.

Portnoy only did that because he was fed up with the fans bitching about every aspect of the albums he put out so he essentially said "here, you mix it, fagets"

This is certainly the most melodic DT album, but its not necessarily that bad in my opinion. 'Bridges in the sky' and 'Breaking all illusions' are magnificent...

"Mangini’s drum parts always seem to stick to the simplest beats possible and rarely (if ever) provide the kind of quirky patterns that made Mike Portnoy so interesting to listen to." - I agree. But let's give him a break. I think he's still trying to get in the groove as the new DT drummer. It can take a while. But I would like to applaud him though for Lost Not Forgotten. That song has an insane drumming pattern.

I feel like I've heard LaBrie say certain words about 30 different times

They sorta do, but they're not near as good.

The drums are fine. This is hands down the best thing they have done since Moore. The Majestic sound is miraculously back...Breaking All Illusions is fantastic.
They have gained much more than they have lost per Portnoys exit, yet the reviewer treats it as a net loss, rather than a net gain.
I was never a huge Portnoy fan to begin with i guess. I was a fan of early dream theater -- i liked their music and sound. I am so happy they are now finally getting back to that direction...it makes me sad that it took them so long and i wonder what could have been if Portnoy had left earlier instead of Kevin Moore.
