Yeah totally love Gabriel's solo stuff. I give a nod to Phil's good work in other projects but his own solo career is pretty weak.

"@Jamie But that forward-pushing album is exciting to me, and the perfected one stinks with boredom, seriously."

Pushing boundaries was a key factor in prog but so was perfecting that boundary pushing sound into good/better music, which was perhaps the most important part of a prog band's progression. The very nature of experimental music such as prog suggests that the second or third try is very often where the magic lies.

The idea of one album being more exciting and enjoyable to listen to simply based on its release date/the fact it came first is frankly absurd.

Gabriel staying with Genesis sounds great in theory but I don't think that would work. I've watched and read some interviews with the band and it turns out Gabriel was barely caring for the band during the making of The Lamb, he just wasn't interested in the "band thing".

But even if he somehow was, to my best knowledge his only contribution to the band (besides singing and writing lyrics) was writing some melodies - some really wonderful ones, like the ones on "The Carpet Crawlers", but still melodies =/= compositions. I don't think he could really compose anything during the Genesis era - which is probably true, considering that it wasn't until his third solo album when his solo music really started to shine.

But yeah, can't know for sure, maybe they shouldn't have split.

@Jamie well, the second and third tries of Genesis were Trespass and Nursery Cryme, so by your logic I'm right. ;)

Sorry Jamie but I can't help it - we're talking about feelings now, and when I listen to Genesis later albums (except Lamb) I can almost feel the stagnation in the band, hear one of the musicians saying "ok, we'll go with the usual thing now", see the band going into the studio with "I hope we'll finish this soon" in their mind, and it just makes me yawn.

The idea of one album being more exciting and enjoyable to listen to simply based on its release date/the fact it came first is frankly absurd
I have a rather short attention span with music (and not only with music), I just can't handle too much of the same thing. Most of the time I listen to stuff chronologically, so it's only natural I'll get bored by some point.

Also just how experimental prog really was is debatable, but have it your way.

I was referring to your comparisons of particular songs from this album to those on Foxtrot. Almost all were vast improvements as would be expected.

Prog wasn't that experimental (but it's viewed as a genre which encouraged experimentation), large portions of this album aren't even experimental at all, that's why for me song writing was such a key thing in the genre and essentially what seperates the good from the not so good because there's only so far a band can go with technical musicianship.

alt, I feel you bro, I always listen to bands in chrono order, if possible it gives you a better view point about where they started and where they went, but does lead to getting bored with more of the same, which is why I cant really get into IM's Fear of the dark and 7th son

Yeah this was a young Genesis creating their signature sound that they would perfect/improve on with the next two albums.
