this may be a dumb question, I hope not. but help a dude out here.

I have neglected most black/death metal for most of my life. trying to get into it currently. This was one of the first albums I picked up. Instrumentally, this album is completely amazing. But I am not a fan at all of the growling. Is this typical of black metal?

or does anyone have a recommendation for something that is instrumentally similar to this without those particular growls? They seem hokey to me. maybe they'll grow on me. or maybe they don't even appear anywhere else...?

any advice?

(awaiting massive bashing)

nope, for the most part all of bm has the growls/rasps, if you like the instrumentation and not the vocals try listening to some folk/neofolk (Vali, etc)

like I said, maybe they'll grow on me. I can't pinpoint what it is about them, but I'm not a fan of their growls. I don't have a problem with anyone else's growls. and the rest of the vocals on here are good. regardless, these guys are definitely talented and write really interesting music. I'll be checking more of them out.

re: Billy Idol album, yeah ftr I have not heard this. but I saw "Billy Idol, Happy Holidays" and it made me chuckle. so why not

well most black and/or death metal acts are going to have growls/screams, but if you want more thats
aesthetically similar to this i would suggest

Ulver - Bergtatt (absolutely essential)
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora (also essential)
Panopticon - Panopticon
Wolves in the Throne Room - Diadem of 12 Stars (their best album)
Falls of Rauros - The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood
In the Woods... - Heart of Ages
Paysage d'Hiver - Paysage d'Hiver (you might want to wait on this one though)
Sombre Forets - Royaume de Glace
Wodensthrone - Loss

Yeah, I don't think he would like Paysage.

I figured most bm/dm vox would be similar in that sense. maybe I'll get used to it, because other than that, I love this album. All other growls/screams have grown on me, so this probably will in time.

thx for the recs there ^^^
