Helpless and Stripsearch definitely explore some of the same themes as OK Computer that same year. Premillennial fears of displacement, entrapment and the death of meaning. Lots of existential dread in '97, it seems...

I’m going to go full on mental and say that Ashes to Ashes is one of the greatest songs of the 90s it really is.

What's the story with the rest of the album though?

2.5 all day this thing, some tunes on the second half I'd rate a 1/5 - wouldn't have qualified as 'Angel Dust' Z-Sides

My theory is the joke of calling this 'Album of the Year' could only be funny if the band knew they were dropping a bit of a relative turkey.

In terms of best year of the '90s, rated by number of 'Doof-declared' classic albums...

'90 = 2 / Prefab Sprout, Doc Corbin Dart

'91 = 4 / Talk Talk, Massive Attack, Nirvana, Slint

'92 = 1 / R.E.M.

'93 = 6 / Tindersticks, Nirvana, Pumpkins, RHP, Wu-Tang Clan, Grant Lee Buffalo

'94 = 8 / Low, Therapy?, Pavement, Lambchop, NIN, GBV, Portishead, Lisa Germano

'95 = 5 / Tindersticks, Tricky, Slowdive, Radiohead, Sparklehorse

'96 = 2 / Lambchop, Swans

'97 = 6 / Radiohead, Palace Music, Elliott Smith, Jim O'Rourke, Robert Wyatt, Modest Mouse

'98 = 6 / Mercury Rev, Sunhouse, Cat Power, Midnight Choir, Eels, BOC

'99 = 1 / Flaming Lips

So '99 is almost like the start of the '10s which sees the number of classic albums fall off a cliff

'93-'98 is my favourite run of years for music

'76-'80 is close behind

Angel Dust is damn close to a 5 rating, and ‘92 needs more classics in my list.

If I get up to 7500 ratings it will def get the 5 bump, right now it’s 2nd for ‘92 and a 4.5. Third place is ‘Slantedand Enchanted’. ‘92 is a bit poorer in quality though I feel
