I really respect this album, and on occasion will even listen to it. Some of the songs are fun to play as well, but for the most part, Metallica are (to me, at least) over-rated. They did do fantastic things for metal, but their innovation ended with this album. And James' vocals are pretty unbearable, especially live. Many of you will wonder why I rated it so high if I don't truly love it.So, as an ex Metallica devotee, I know that this is a good album, even if I don't particularly care for it much anymore. This Message Edited On 05.31.06

IMO the innovation ended with The Black Album.

I never knew that Metallica were innovative in the first place.

In the Thrash scene, I believe they were.

Thrash wasn't even necessarily an innovative genre itself. It's basically Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but sped up and dumbed down. Kind of hard to make Judas Priest even dumber, but eh.

Thrash is what forged all the great metal bands of today

I don't see how that makes it innovative.

Influential, however, it is.

This seems very unlikely for some odd reason.

Because not all metal is warp-speed picking and pentatonic shredding. There are many types of metal, some of which have virtually nothing to do with thrash.

Because bands like Opeth and Maudlin Of The Well have no thrash in their sound.

That doesn't really disprove his point, though. I like this album I guess, but I rarely listen to it. I rarely listen to metal at all, actually. This Message Edited On 05.31.06

I agree with him, the point is that thrash didnt forge all of heavy metals best bands today

I personally think of them as a little of both. However, I'm sure their are others here much more knowledgeable in this subject than I.
