I think you're overrating some people. I'm certain that there IS a percentage of people who do rate albums based on general consensus. Maybe it's not very many, but definitely.

And Lateralus is probably overrated too.

I love the album, but there's nothing death metal about this "melodic death metal".

Mikael's vocals have their roots in both black and death metal. The drumming also uses a few death metal beats too. But you're right, guitars and bass are pretty much all Maiden-ite fair.

Which isn't a bad thing at all. I really do love Dark Tranquillity and I really love Iron Maiden. I noticed some of the death metal-esque rolls the drummer did when I was listening to this album again yesterday… He's quite talented. But I hate being flamed by fanboys in other conversations (not you guys) when I hear DT being hailed as a great melodic death metal band, and I have a different opinion. To me it makes a lot more sense if you take the "death" out of the tag so you're left with melodic metal. Which is really an inadequate term, but seems more accurate than anything to do with death metal. This album sounds nothing like "The Jester Race" or anything by ATG, much less like any of the revered bands from the Stockholm scene.

See, I differ from you there. I think that this actually sounds a lot more like The Jester Race than it does newer "Melodic Death" bands like Scar Symmetry or Soilwork. I've actually heard a few people refer to them as separate genres in all honesty; placing early Dark Tranquillity, In Flames and other such bands in the Melodic Death Metal field (for their use of folksy/gothic influences, death metal drumming and vocals, etc.), with newer bands with more modern and electronic elements classified as "Melodeath". While I wouldn't go so far as to separate the two, I still think The Gallery is more akin to the original Stockholm/Goteborg scenes than anything in the newer waves.

Sure the name Melodic Death Metal might not be exactly descriptive, but hey, if you're going to go that route, you better change the name of "Heavy Metal" (referring to the old school/traditional metal movement here), cause there are definitely heavier forms of metal.

Absolutely. They are for sure more closely related to early Gothenburg bands than newer melodeath.. "melodeath".. bands. I guess what I keep getting stuck on in this album is the guitar. It seems to me like there aren't any solid riffs here, just more or less a lot of coherent soloing. At least, not the kind of riffs that appear to separate this from the likes of other Gothenburg/Stockholm bands of the time. "The Jester Race" has some pretty beefy, heavy riffs in it, along with pounding death metal drumming and much deeper vocals, and likewise fits the bill for "melodeath". That's all I'm trying to say, I guess. Not that genre tagging means anything to me anyway, because I'll enjoy the music for what it is regardless… I'd just like to know other people's opinions on where this album falls into play when the line is drawn between what is and isn't melodic death metal. I think it mostly has to do with where/when this music was released.

The only thing that prevents me from giving this record a perfect 5 is the female vocals. I absolutely hate them. Everything else was perfect.

This album really never gets old or boring, i heard it the first time when i was around 14 years

old, i bougth it from a cd store we used to have in my local town becouse i tougth the cover was

cool.

I only listened to metallica/iron maiden at the time and had no knowledge about death metal or

melodic death metal you would think i would hate the sound of the growling at first listen but i did

not infact its one of myall time favs now.

Probably some of the best purchase iv done.

and i agree the female vocals fits the music perfectly... Honestly i always get suprised everytime i

relisten to this album becouse i always forget how good it is.

This is the only DT I've heard other than Character, and they sound so vastly different from each other it's rediculous. Awesome album and review.

Yep, out of respect mostly. But it IS a good album, I just can't quite see what all the masturbation's about. Newer albums are kinda easier for me to get into.
