well then sir you’re cooler than a polar bear’s toenails
it’s still crazy to me how much more nuanced and intricate the production got on Mezzanine, was there some great shift in high fidelity standards between 94 and 98? Mezz sounds sooooo fresh even today

Ooof, imagine that 💙🥶
I don't know but something happened there for sure. Perhaps it was also a change in esthetics/taste?

the shift from this to Mezzanine is still fascinating to me as well
I imagine it was mostly Del Naja's influence, considering he was essentially the last man standing as far as Massive Attack goes by the time they got to 100th Window, and I know it was the sort of situation where the "band" members didn't even want to be in the studio at the same time as each other by the end of it
but man, whatever insanity it took to make that record, i'm still genuinely amazed by it every time I even think about putting it on

Del Naja clearly wanted them to go more rockist on Mezzanine like I guess The Prodigy did a year before, and also a little conceptual like ‘Ok Computer’
It worked out well though, although I personally still prefer the collective thing they had on Blue Lines - Mezz is miles ahead of ‘Protection’ though so Del Naja made the right call to switch it up
Mezzanine is a very pristine album and it was almost too perfect, partly designed to blow the music critics of the day away, which it did with ease - like fish in a barrel they were, powerless to resist

1. Unfinished Sympathy
2. Protection
3. Teardrop
A trilogy of songs that are all weighty contenders for the greatest of all time. Iconic stuff.

Can’t think of a trilogy of songs that are more nostalgic of the ‘90s than those
Definitive early 90s song, definitive mid 90s song, definitive late 90s song
