Probably agree though I really like FAMILY MAN and think it’s unfairly maligned (and thus massively underrated).
|
| |
Idk, man. I just could not take Family Man seriously at all. Maybe I’ll try again.

There is an inherent corniness to slam poetry in nearly every capacity (sorry it’s true) but I think Rollins does as good a job “selling” it as anyone could dream. Perhaps that’s me retroactively projecting what I know about the guy on the record, but it didn’t make me cringe, and that in and of itself is a major victory. Plus it was a remarkably daring endeavor for its time and amid its niche, and that to some extent must be commended - in a lot of ways Side A is a figurative middle finger to the punk scene of the time and honestly what’s more punk than that?
On the flip side (literally), Side B is miraculous. Three of my favorite Black Flag tracks. Admittedly I tend to prefer their borderline-sludge stuff to the straight-up hardcore tracks but yeah, idk, that album totally blindsided me and that’s part of what I find so alluring.

Slam cheesiness is an inherent quality, you’re right. HOWEVER, I did used to attend and perform at slam poetry readings. I do know that it has more to offer than that album. Maybe that’s why I couldn’t get past it.

In any case - SIDE B SAVES THE DAY! 🙃
|
| |
I’ll start halfway through and then listen to the first half.
|
| |
Y’know if the spoken bits were placed between the musical tracks I’ll bet more people would find them far less enervating.
