S/A is a more suitable way of apportioning perceived value, because I suppose "B tier" can have negative connotations. Fair.
I was wondering if / when that would irritate you / someone. Success. It was actually a way of respecting Alice Coltrane and also indulging in my own laziness (i.e. not typing his full name every time). The potential for annoyance caused was just a bonus

As far as JoCo go this always felt mildly academic to me. Call me a plebeian but I’ve always preferred Blue Train / My Favourite Things / A Love Supreme.

I prefer BLUE TRAIN and A LOVE SUPREME as well. I'd take the t/t of MY FAVORITE THINGS over any one cut on this, but I think this is better in totality.

yeah, I’d (marginally) take Blue Trane too. A Love Supreme for sure. My Fave Things was nowhere near tbh

Blue Train, My Favorite Things and Meditations are my top 3. I'd have to think about it after that. Still haven't heard all of his stuff but got most of the "classics" out of the way. I think Sun Ship might be 4th on that list tbh.

All great choices, especially MEDITATIONS (my personal favorite). ASCENSION and OM would probably complete my Top 3, with BLUE TRAIN and A LOVE SUPREME rounding out the Top 5. Unless we're allowed to include live albums, too, in which case THE OLATUNJI CONCERT would be 1 or 2.

I dig Om but its not among my favs tbh. Gotta give it more time though. Still gotta hear Ascension.

Om IS my fave currently but could definitely see that changing
Meditations, Blue Train, A Love Supreme, Ascension & then this might be 6th

Meditations rules but Ascension is too far for me lol. I found my free jazz limit. I can’t get there haha. Maybe one day
Coltrane, Ballads, and Africa/Brass all rule too

Kulu Se Mama is bloody good also
Forgot about Ole Coltrane as well which is up there. Damn, this guy was insane!

almost forgot how gorgeous “Syeeda’s Song Flute” is
I’m enjoying how laid back a lot of this is on reflection, nice dynamic contrasts. There are of course bursts of explosive energy but it isn’t relentless and the more serene passages are really landing rn

hmm okay I did Blue Trane, this and Love Supreme back-to-back-to-back and I enjoyed this the most - which definitely conflicts with my previous thoughts 🤔

Interesting take.
Not necessarily an incorrect one, though.

I guess you could say this about so much of JoCo’s work but there’s a rather lovely balance between the cerebral and the visceral here (it FEELS like that anyway, because jazz theory is not something I’ve studied at all, lol)
I also perhaps appreciate the less high-octane moments more than previously

well yeah, Blue Train is an A-grade bop caper and ALS is a transcendental journey, but more than anything else in his discog (citation needed), this one focuses on making enduring tunes out of really compact smart ideas. demands more micro>macro focus than the other two, but delivers on that level like nothing else
also glad to see that My Favorite Things is still doing God's work and sorting the pseuds from the hearty souls, v based record

I used to be able to play that opening Countdown drum solo. Might be time to re-learn it

“ I also perhaps appreciate the less high-octane moments more than previously”
This is jazz. You gotta marinate in it indefinitely. Can’t tell you how many times this has happened to me, and in both directions. Sometimes I may go into it hoping to be spoken to on a personal emotional level and it’s just shredding and I can’t get into it and I’m like this is blegh. Then I’ll revisit later and I’m like damn this is incredible. And vice versa. Some of it is mood, some of it is other intangibles. Not that this is solely specific to jazz obviously, but I find this to happen to me at least more frequently with jazz because it can be so broad and equally dense
