True, but he was still the only expendable one in their eyes, even though he shits on lars in terms of musicianship
I will always miss his live vocals on Creeping Death :-(

Let's be real, the studio engineer for this album was probably an unpaid intern

agree ^^^^. or maybe it was just Lars who came out with this absurd idea of trying to catch a "garage band sound"

Thank god Jason left the band before this abortion was made, otherwise it would've been embarassing for him

Why do people always make fun of the lifestyle/deathstyle line in "Frantic"... always thought of that as one of the band's better lyrics, especially post-80s

erm... really?

Yeah fr. This album has some lyrical gems imo, also has a lot of really good riffs, they're just put to some horribly repetitive and awfully produced songs. Also James's vocals are a little too unpolished here to say the least so that also puts a damper pn things.

Well, it's creative in a trashy way I guess. I can see the appeal tbh, but it's just so hilarious and delivered in a serious way and that's just not worling imo haha

Yeah, I think the combination of the band's inner-conflicts and the huge rise of nu-metal and it's reliance on ultra-emotionally-transparent lyricism was a recipe for some overly serious songwriting here, which also kinda ties in with the no guitar solos shtick because guitar solos = fun and this shit is serious!1! I for one think some good songs came out of this album but it's weird knowing that these are the same guys that made "Whiplash".

I have to agree with your point that shorter runtimes would have this listenable and even enjoyable though. The runtimes reall killed this and that's why this is a hard 1 for me. Every good thing about this got absolutely ruined

yeah there is ZERO need for those songs to be 7-8 mins long. its not like they progress. its just the same shit over and over

The only good thing about this album is that it takes a lot of the hate off of Load

Yeah I find it funny how with their post Load-era "return to form" albums they pretty much took maybe the most criticised trait of their 80s material and especially AJFA, the tracks lengths, and just ran it into the fucking ground with their last three albums. Hardwired in particular would've definitely been better if it was just the first disc + "Spit Out the Bone".
I remember Kirk talking about how the band made the black album in large part because of how gruelling it was to play the AJFA songs live... yet they've been playing like 8 songs from Death Magnetic/Hardwired live on those album's respective tour cycles.

Also I just remembered now that some kid in elementary school tried to convince me that he was the guitarist of Metallica.

You've only just now realized that kid was not in Metallica
