"Album rules but the drums production always bugged me. They sound small and thin in the mix. There is detail, space, very good dynamics, but why are the drums so petite?"

agreed with this on relisten. guess Jonas is forever the worst part of the band - performance is pretty limp compared to everything else too. gonna have to play it like Agalloch pre-Aesop Dekker and just tune out of them as much as poss

I really dig this. Could be my limited experience but this surely must be a key influence for Neige/Alcest.

Nah, The Fall of Hearts is still my favorite of theirs. But I think I've already reiterated my thoughts on that quite enough at this point, lol

Have not heard nu-nu-Katatonia aside from the last two, but that's 20 yrs to make another good album? Not sold

"Breaking Benjamin tier band"
pretty hyperbolic but not entirely without merit. I first got into Katatonia around 2010 when I was still mainly listening to radio rock. I had a metalhead friend who teased me about my taste in music so I googled "metal bands that sound like mainstream rock" or some shit like that and I found a post comparing Katatonia to A Perfect Circle and Chevelle, who I was really into at the time.
I gave The Great Cold Distance a listen and they've been my favorite band ever since.

I remember posting a comment where I said Viva Emptiness was "gothic Staind". I got a ton of shit for it, but I still stand by it

I’ve only heard this, their debut, and their most recent LP, but are their albums that bad going forward? I was planning on doing a discog run pretty soon actually and the ratings here and on RYM seem solid. I read they shift genres throughout their career.
