The influence is there, no doubt about it. Iommi is the father of metal, it was impossible to be a kid in the 80's and not be influenced by him is some sorta way. Nonetheless, in purely musical terms, Candlemass is very different. Bands like Trouble, Pagan Altar, and Pentagram sound more like Sabbath (even in technical terms like guitar tones, production, etc).

If there's one Candlemass record that the sabbath influence is more obvious, it's "from the 13th sun". Check it out if you haven't, Strike.

Prefer Epicus so far, in fact it's stronger in almost every conceivable way, riffs/atmosphere/vox etc.

Don't know how many people are aware of Mike Wead's contribution to the record. The last instrumental, "Black Candles", is entirely his composition.

I need to listen to more pre-00's doom. All I've heard is Candlemass and Black Sabbath, if you want to count them as doom. I tried getting into funeral doom, but that just isn't happening.
Crazy what a difference 10 years can make lmao.

I'd argue somewhat differently regarding Trouble considering that albums like Psalm 9 were more innovative. You can't have Epicus without it, I think.

Really pretty album cover

The first time I bought this album, i picked it up strictly because of the name of the band. I freaked out when I saw the cover - even though it was a small-ass cassette cover - and when I finally listened to it, it was an all-time fave after only one listen.

Epicus had a much more powerful impact and a lasting impression on me. From a technical standpoint, this is more mature, more coherent, but it does sound power-metalish. What makes me love epicus a bit more is its atmosphere, i think. It sounds archaic, medieval. As if it was recorded in a tower during the dark ages.
