I think his vocals here are very strained and just weird, sounds more like a yelp and I think even Corey himself hates the vocals here.

Fair enough though, they're different to everything that came before and after.

This kind of pitched shouting could have worked on a really grimey thrash album or hardcore album with a different production style and different rhythms. He tried to deliver very similar vocal patterns to their usual stuff here and it doesn’t work with these weak shouts

uhh I can understand he sounds weak, but there was nothing 'usual' happening here considering the past 3 records

Sounds worse here than pretty much any time in his career. New album, whatever technique they’re using to reintroduce the distortion to his vocals helps, probably using natural preamp distortion again like the early days

Relinquished, to me AHIG and the one after don’t count, I stopped listening to this band after this album came out, until the new one.

"I think his vocals here are very strained and just weird"

And this is exactly how I feel about his screams on WANYK. He pulls it off enough for it to work, but they still sound weak to me.

On the heavy tunes, he’s still trying to deliver his syncopated/rapid harsh vocals during some of the verses and choruses and still trying to emphasize the big moments with big drawn out screams. They just don’t work because the vocals are weak and he and the producer are Not generating any distortion. If he fully embraced the limitations of his voice here and they wrote the whole album around it, it would work better. They did that to an extent, with the ballads and songs like Vermillion 1/Duality which use very sparing harsh vocals, and unsurprisingly those are the times he sounds better.

vocals on the new album sound more like Iowa than anything else they've done, and Iowa screams are my favorite so I fuck with it. The strained thing he does here often sounds weak, and like you said, even Corey doesn't care for his vocals here.

However....his cleans were perfect on this. I love how upfront and earthy his vocals sound on Danger Keep Away. They never produce him like that anymore

Idk how anyone thinks Corey sounds good on this album. He sounds strained the entire album and almost like he's in pain when doing harsh vocals. It's awful!

I disagree, he doesn't sound like he's in pain to me. Iowa sounds like he's in pain, like he's pushing the scream out from his diaphragm/chest as hard as he can, just that he doesn't care because the album is so reckless and insane.

I feel like the end of Opium is what you guys are talking about, where he does the syncopated, fast-paced vocals he did a lot of on Iowa and the S/T, but they just don't sound bad to me. He still sounds full and powerful to me on this album, the scream is lighter and more melodic than before.

I think your criticisms are interesting, but when I listen to the album I just don't hear it. Idk. I do think the screams here probably work best when used sparingly though, "NOTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS" sounds epic in Duality for instance.

His screams were amazing on the s/t and Iowa, but he hasn't really been able to get the same level of intensity since. His vox still work on this and WANYK though
