I still prefer EVOL by a hair, but this probably the objective best pick for top SY. One of the best albums in general tbh

EVOL might be tied actually now that you mention it. i still love Daydream but it's kind of grown off me the past few years.

as far as later SY i always really liked Rather Ripped.

Still don't get why people love EVOL so much

Might be my 2nd least favorite of their 80s stuff

Shadow of a Doubt is the best on EVOL yeah

Evol has the most atmosphere of any of their albums (ig you could make a case for Bad Moon) and the way it drifts in and out of actual songwriting and amorphous noise jams is more engaging than on any other of theirs imo (this also does v well, but feels a little more stop-start / here's a verse, here's some noise etc)

Eh it lacks that grit I crave from them

Bas Moon is mad good, super underrated album

Interesting considering that it's also one of their grittiest and darkest albums (not q on the level of Confusion and Bad Moon, but close enough)

Yeah, Bad Moon is way underrated. On par with Goo, should be considered part of their golden run

I wouldn't call EVOL gritty at all. It's very mid-tempo, medium volume and more focused on being abstract/trippy

When I think gritty Sonic Youth I think like stuff like Pacific Coast Highway or like Death Valley '69

but I agree that it's darker

"It's very mid-tempo, medium volume and more focused on being abstract/trippy"
none of these things are related to what i'd consider grit (except maybe abstraction (but its abstraction tends towards grittiness anyway (so that's moot))) lol

Whatever, I just don't like how midtempo it is

Gimme more Cross the Breezeses and more Kim shouting in general

I just listened to EVOL for the first time this morning and a) I agree with Ars (so far) and b) it amplified my appreciation for this. I prefer the more frequent bursts of energy provided here. Abstract ambience isn’t necessarily off-putting in itself, but in the context of this band and what they can provide, it doesn’t appeal. I will persevere regardless.

I do also agree with Ars and Demon, I prefer when they let it loose and rock it out rather than when they go for abstract stuff. Still love EVOL tho, but I slightly prefer this one

"prefer when they let it loose and rock it out rather than when they go for abstract stuff"
best SY blurs the lines between these, and that goes for everything from The Sprawl to Expressway to Yr. Skull to Mote to the Diamond Sea to Pacific Coast Highway to their hardest rocker (Rain King)
