Lol tf do you mean "would have", MM were like a regionally successful indie band that went major and got boosted by P4k in the early 2000s, what they were doing before that had fuck all to do with any "culture" beyond the kids they were selling CDs and t-shirts to and the convenience stores they were smoking meth behind and that's why it's essential

anyone who claims 90s Cave was short on musical ideas knows dick all about good arrangements

zak trying to clutch the coattails of a buncha hasbeens and dated C-tier alt rock while hmpfing that one of the few bands to have produced an enduring magnum-O from that era hadn't received its major label contract in time to satiate the culture has made my day. man was too tuned into the re-runs of robert smith and billy corgan sucking each other's pinkies and the internet is trying its best to save him

For the record I do like Modest Mouse, in actual fact their first few albums are amazing but they didn’t garner a sniff back in the day.

It wasn’t until Good News came out that any notice was taken.

I think it received full marks on the planet sound, channel 4 ceefax page.

Have some of that fuckers!

Zak I honestly think that's only true of the UK. People were talking about MM on the internet, I remember downloading tons of bootlegs and being really excited by the band before they dropped good news.

I mean at least acknowledge that the moon and Antarctica was fairly well known, they even had a song on a car commercial for Christ's sake

Nobody had the internet other than the odd sod and libraries until the turn of the century.

Johnny sending out a battalion of strawmen to try and ignore the point of the discussion - which is that absolutely no one in the 90s would have predicted in 2023 that Modest Mouse would be the second band after Radiohead every 14 year old kid checks on the internet (they WOULD have predicted Radiohead of course).

you can simultaneously acknowledge that modest mouse's cult following has expanded to the point of ubiquity amongst alternative circles while also recognising that just because they didn't make it to the uk during the 90s doesn't mean they weren't influential and known about elsewhere

I remember talking to American indie enthusiasts online at the start of 2000 and they were all telling me to check out MM, so I'm guessing they were into the band before then. Sure, they were NOWHERE near as big as Radiohead in the 90's - they started releasing stuff later in the decade, they didn't have a megahit like Creep, they weren't on a major until Moon and Antarctica. I'm not sure why they can't be in the running for having a better 90's record than the Bends, which is the actual point of the discussion

it's the disparity between the extremes - and they are real extremes

Modest Mouse in the internet age are ubiquitous and for rock/indie are seen as having a 'top ten albums of the 90s' type deal

Zak is 100% correct in that this only became a thing after about 2004, similar with 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' and maybe even 'Spiderland'.

I never saw 'Lonesome Crowded' listed in a Top 100 anything until about the mid '00s. Even Bjork was taken 50% less seriously back in the 90s tbh, she was rarely mentioned in lists of best albums.

Just how the accepted 'canon of greats' changes over time, it just happened a lot quicker (and seems so much more DEFINITIVE due to the medium) thanks to the internet.

If the band had any traction in the 90s it would definitely have made its way to the UK.

All the music mags were looking to push whatever the latest thing was, it’s like it is now but a lot less saturated and more word of mouth.

I’ll say it again Modest Mouse were non existent from 96-early 2000s

yeah kompys with the more productive line of reasoning, like whether or not MM could be conceivably lumped into alt rock
