Not only did it cause Alternative rock to become mainstream but it took the spotlight from far superior bands at the time (Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, etc). The fact that VH1 always has Smells Like Teen Spirit on their 90's countdowns is proof that it is soulless, generic and repetitive crap."

Of course, it was Kim Gordon who encouraged Nirvana to sign to a major label. I remember hearing Thurston Moore (though it could have been Lee) say of Nirvana's success that it was like "the good guys won for a bit".
