This and TSIB are definitely minimum top 3 Neurosis for me.

“For some reason this album didn’t click with me when I heard it for the first time last year, but since then it grew on me immensely. Might be a perfect one.”
yeah, I would argue that this is maybe the biggest grower in their entire discography. It’s not as immediately satisfying as most of their other records. But on repeated listens… I dunno. When it grabs you it just does not let go. I fucking adore this album.

It’s just more meditative I guess is what I’m trying to say. Which is saying a lot because this band makes some long ass songs. Also kinda weird that I feel that way about this record specifically considering they have plenty of songs that are as long as anything here, and more than a few that are even longer.

I disagree, but they're damn close.

I feel like a lot people think TSIB is when their whole sound shifted, however, many forget Souls At Zero is the one that did four years earlier. That album has a very special place in my heart since it was the first Neurosis' album I ever heard. I remember downloading it from a Blogspot specialized in Post-Metal and Sludge, I also downloaded some other formative albums such as Baroness' Red album, ISIS first three full length albums and Godflesh's Streetcleaner, good times.

ToG > TSiB yes, ToG is more nuanced.

I can not argue with that.

Tbh Through Silver in Blood might not even make my top 5 from these guys now that this new record is out
1. This
2. new one
3. Times of Grace
4. A Sun That Never Sets
5. okay probably Through Silver in Blood… but I think I like Given to the Rising more than a lot of folks

And I definitely like Souls at Zero less than most, tbh that’s really only above the first two and the last two (not counting the new one)

AND aside from this and Undying Love… I think I like amenra more man. I know they flat out just probably would not exist without these guys but that run from Mass III through now basically has just been unreal, Mass VI is almost on the level of this for me

Hell yeah Amenra. I was thinking of those guys when someone mentioned the big 3 of post-metal. It should be big 4.

Cult of Luna and ISIS I guess?
I would agree, tbh I like Amenra more than those other two, but they’re very clearly heavily influenced by them is all.

I feel like there is a pretty good argument as to why Pelican would be in an imaginary top 4 of PM over amenra

Pelican have some great highs but also some underwhelming lows. Saw them live a couple of weeks ago and went crazy when they played Drought.

Or evil, or collab! I haven’t seen a good collaborative list in a while and I would absolutely be interested to see where you two would game out those two bands
I have never listened to pelican, obv have come across them a few times just never turned them on… where do I start

I think their debut is their best but they have several great albums. If ur gonna check em out chrono seems fine
Maybe relinquished has input on that, if he does its probably better than my advice.

This one is dropping dramatically in my rankings. It was also my favorite in my Neurosis beginnings.
