Who gives two shits about the story? Or, better still, who LISTENS to MUSIC and places greater emphasis on the lyrics?

Depends on the genre/artist. Plenty of artists' greatest strength is their lyrics, in which case they could be said to be more important than the music.

Lyrics are important, of course, but it seems Roger thought himself more as a writer and less as a musician here. Anyways, the best songs for me are

To be honest Waters is a better writer than he is a musician. His song writing was his greatest strength and his greatest contribution to Floyd.

Few amazing tracks here. Some of the ones that just serve to advance the story are bad though.

Ahah not really. Not that this one is as fantastic as it's said.

I think The Final Cut is better because it finds Waters writing from the heart and not trying to dress it up in musical theatre.

it comes off a bit whiny and the whole thing is a bit dull IMO

@JamieTwort well, true, that was a broad exaggeration on my part, but even in genres like hip hop, a fabulous verse will be botched if your flow/cadence/delivery is not good, right? I mean, at the end of day, it's music we're listening to. If I want only the written part, there's books, poetry etc. for that. Just my 2 cents

Also, when I said "writer" I meant it in the "write lyrics", not generally music. He is usually a great songwriter, but great songwriting involves creating great music as well and I just don't see that on the majority of the Wall.

Of course great lyrics can't save a song if everything else about it is actually bad, all I'm saying is that when everything else is at least adequate lyrics can be the best and most important part of a song/album, in which case greater emphasis should be placed on the lyrics.

I wasn't really thinking of hip hop as the genre that places the most importance on lyrics, although it's a fine example, I was thinking more about singer-songwriter folk, e.g. Dylan or Cohen, where one could argue that the delivery is not good but their music is still heralded as classic due primarily to the lyrics.

first of all, teach me how to quote lol

second, I see your point in the first paragraph, but for instance, I would never rate Dylan's Highway 61 a 5 (which I did) if the music wasn't actually 5 star material. For me:

average/just adequate music + classic lyrics= just a good album

classic music + average/just adequate lyrics=at least an excellent album

I realize this is all a matter of perspective, though ;)

[qvote]text here[/quote]

(quote spelt incorrectly so that it shows and doesn't actually quote)

For me the music on most of Dylan's albums isn't anything special. Average would be a bit harsh perhaps but his song writing is undoubtedly the main draw, therefore I think placing emphasis on/focussing on the lyrics over the music in such a case is perfectly normal to the extent that it would be odd not to.

I strongly disagree about Dylan's delivery. He may not sing in tune, but he knows how to keep the listener's attention and tell a good story.
