which means it's really high on the 2020 charts right now --> a bunch of people who don't listen to this kind of music are just now noticing that it's rated higher than their favorite 2020 album --> it's about to get a bunch of 2/5 ratings from people who haven't actually listened to it --> it'll eventually settle at a ~3.60-3.70 average

The generalize "overrated" feeling , often, seems more to me like, hate it or love it.
But definitively left no one indifferent.

‘Overrated’ is often used as a lazy, dismissive fallback option when one simply cannot comprehend the subject matter, sometimes when little effort has been made to actually engage with the material.
What’s wrong with simply saying you don’t get it, or it isn’t for you? Absolutely nothing wrong with admitting as such... Probably because doing that potentially reveals one’s ignorance. ‘Overrated’ leaves this up to the readers interpretation, personal pride intact.
For the record I wouldn’t swan into an indie folk thread and call the release in question overrated. I might offer some thoughts on why I didn’t like it, but I can’t pretend to know anything about the genre.

You are being dismissed, you are being told you’re a dumb-ass, you’re apathetic.
You’re not angry enough.
You’re angry enough.
You’re so angry that you’re not even thinking.
You’re not thinking enough.
Your mind starts to chatter, you start to think about the imaginary arguments you could have in your head, the arguments you could have in your brain if you’re forced to think, when it all becomes one giant fuck you and you can go the fuck nowhere because that's when it becomes true. Because you don't have enough hatred.
You don't have enough malice.

The reality is, I wasn't 'out' about it for too long before 'getting on board.' I was married, I was happily married, I was on very good terms with my partners.
I wasn't fooling anybody; I'm not a woman-hater, but I'm certainly not going to say it's a privilege to have sex with men. I did and do feel some guilt and shame about that sometimes, though. It might surprise some people to learn that I'd rarely considered going it alone, or talking to the men I dated about sex outside of marriage. I made my own choices.
