This has some really solid tracks, and some really bad ones.

i will never understand why this was so hated

I will never understand the supposed confusion that people have over the negative reaction that this album got. If you've heard the three albums prior to this one it should be pretty obvious why fans may have a problem, even if you like this.

"i will never understand why this was so hated"
because it was their first album back in 8 years and totally ditched their core sound for SiriusXM Radio OCTANE channel vibes
did i mention the majority of the songs blow? lmao i mean if you like this good for you but it's not hard to imagine why people don't. i would have it 2 or below if it wasn't for one or two decent tracks

Basically, its because the style changed and people wanted another Disambiguation or something. Honestly doesnt feel like that huge of a deviation from something like They're Only Chasing Safety on a purely instrumental level other than more clean vocals.

The style changed from TOCS to DTGL and again to Disambiguation and no one complained about that.

sorry but this sounds nothing like TOCS instrumentally

Its not like the writing got THAT much worse. I feel like if this was releaaed as a second Sleepwave album the response would've been less dismal. It being associated with the Underoath name probably puts different expectations in one's head. A good chunk probably hate Spencer's vocals which I don't get at all, Aaron has the more stereotypically "whiny" sound in comparison.

They're Only Chasing Safety had a more streamlined and simple approach to instrumental work than the three albums that followed. Erase Me is also more streamlined and simple. the main difference is the electronics are far more pronounced.

I mean to be fair Reinventing Your Exit could've fit on Erase Me with some production tweaks and industrial elements added.
Also should be said that TOCS has possibly Spencer's worst vocal performances to date, he sounds like he's trying too hard to be Dallas Taylor.

spencer like never sounds in tune here and the writing is nothing like tocs. i agree his scream is better here but that kinda means nothing when he never does
end of no frame he kills it tho

He sounds fine to me, and I used to have issues dealing with Aaron's kinda whiny delivery (which is SAYING something from me...I.like even Heroine era Sonny Moore) so hearing Spencer on cleans felt a lot more refreshing before I really warmed up to Aaron lol

aaron is bad here but hes so good on everything else (some of my fav underoath moments come from his vox, like him and spencer doing the desperate times chorus or when hes just belting out tjat c5 over spencers scream in writing on the walls)
i used to think spencer was the better singer bc hes fucking incredible on disambiguation (in completion is without a doubt his best performance singing) but the kinda off key singing of his works a lot lot better on that album than it does here

Aaron was my barrier to entry with their older work for a while actually. Its not his performance on Erase Me that bugged me at all. Plus that one live album they did, Aaron was insufferable at times on that for a while imo.
I'm not even sure what you mean by off key, he hits the notes fine to me. Just a bit pitchy.

its not like thaat bad but def a bit off in places. writing is still the biggest problem here some of this is way bland and boring

this would be a 4.5 if they cut Wake Me and Rapture, two worst songs here. aside from that I don't hear an issue tbh I actually like On My Teeth a lot more than I used to. I can maaayyyybe see a case for I Gave Up getting axed but I loved that one.

i gave up is such a surprisingly bad closer for a band whos closers are usually anything but. song is trying to do way way too many things at once without nearly committing to them all and its just this weird awkward mess. wake me rapture and ihateit are bad, and ive never really cared for the opener here either. rest is good but def has grown off me since its release (this came out right when i was at my peak of liking them so i really really really tried with this)
run from hold your breath to in motion is still good as fuck tho
