"Not really tho, that's why subgenres exist
Hating a subgenre is one thing but hating an umbrella genre tag is quite another, entirely"
subgenres exist so you can hate just one subgenre and not the entire genre? what are you talkin
about?
Plenty of people hate entire genres and have completely rational reasons for it. Pop is by far the
easiest to hate because it is simplistic repetitive shit that is essentially designed to be catchy
for a small period of time before the horrid songwriting, obnoxiously repetitive instrumentals and
lyrics are finally noticed.

Honestly, when someone tells me that they hate an entire genre, it makes me respect their opinion far less.

It's pretty stupid to hate any genre. People who say that they do are usually uninformed and basing their opinions on insufficient evidence. The two most popular genres to hate are country and rap, and that's because mainstream/radio country and rap are garbage... but I'd like to think that people on sputnik, in general, know that.

You're spot on with the first part, gypsy. But you're giving this site too much credit.

I meant that they'd probably agree that mainstream country/rap are garbage, which is why they're looking for something more.

No it isn't stupid at all and you haven't given a single valid reason or example of an artist that
shows why pop is a respectable genre. Stop acting like you are open minded/informed for defending
garbage music. Bringing up country and rap on the radio being unrepresentative works against your
point, pop by definition is shit on the radio, it's the worst part of every genre of musicians
willing to sell their souls for radio play.
@Chuck the beatles only really started out as a pop group and became substantial musicians as they
grew more popular. Definitely cant say the same for MJ or Kanye, it would be generous to say either
of these hacks have made a single classic song in their entire career, especially Kanye. Honestly
amazes me people don't see him as the knock-off hip hop biter, fake revolutionary, pretentious pop
star that he is. Ignorance is bliss. Same with MJ fanatics, completely delusional people trying to
make their lives important by vicariously living through a hack and deluding themselves into
thinking hes brilliant by mindlessly writing off all valid criticisms of the artist as "hate".

Kate Bush, Grimes, M.I.A... what is pop, dude? That's the most vague "genre" in the world. Are Animal Collective pop?

Pop music defined:
an aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology.
an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities
an emphasis on recording, production, and technology, over live performance.
a tendency to reflect existing trends rather than progressive developments.
much pop music is intended to encourage dancing, or it uses dance-oriented beats or rhythms.

That sounds pretty good to me. The trouble is when the music's manufactured/soulless and there's no creativity.
