"You said I think I'm like Tennessee Williams" is like the saddest moment on this album
|
| |
City Middle overall is just devastating really

Album Rating: 5.0
yeah dude City Middle is definitely the emotional South Pole of this record, Lit Up being the North

I wait for the click
I wait, but it doesn't kick in...

Although "break my arms around the one I love" runs it pretty close

the only album that deserves a 5.5/5

Wrong: Boxer does as well

Boxer's a stone cold 5 but it ain't no Alligator. Not a knock on Boxer or anything; I re-assessed my top 10 albums list earlier today and it came in at #6, but this is the pinnacle of music for me

Boxer is my favorite National, with this and TWFM tied for second with this having a tiny edge

Alligator is personally/emotionally my favourite The National, but High Violet is my fave overall
|
| |
High Violet was my favorite for years and now it's my least favorite. It's still a 5 tho lol, also the first National album I listened to

High Violet is incredible but it also has Runaway which is a strong contender for worst song ever written

Album Rating: 5.0
What? Runaway rules man.
|
| |
Runaway is amazing, you are crazy dude

AngryLittleAlchemist: As between those two, Alligator, but I would say the best place to start would be either Boxer or High Violet.

And yeah what, Runaway is amazing. One of the group's most quietly devastating songs. "What makes you think I'm enjoying being led to the flood?" hits hard every time.
|
| |
Yeah it's one of my favorite choruses by them honestly

Sometimes this feels like a 5. Then I remember that I deleted "Val Jester" and "Friend of Mine" from the playlist years ago, and that this is "only" almost perfect.

Feel kind of the same, I'm often tempted to 5 this but the whole experience just doesn't quite come together with enough power to make it a 5.
