It's true but I guess I'm a bit of a completionist. I'll sit through some early stuff that's not great in order to get a good sense of the progression.

I don't have time to sit through bad discographies. In the case of Death I could've gone chronologically but as a complete DM newbie my instincts were telling me to try Symbolic first due to a) it's reputation overall & b) the fact it wasn't straight-up DM. I don't regret that decision.
It feels safer to go for the highest rated ones first - although this might be because I wasn't on Spotify (until very recently), so I've ended up buying albums that I probably shouldn't have based on Youtube first impressions.

If you're unfamiliar with a genre then it makes sense to bounce around a bit.
I don't sit through entire bad discogs, just some less good albums if they're on the way to classics.

Fair enough. Everything has it's exceptions. I wish there was more time honestly, I'm either moving too slowly in discovering new things & getting impatient, or speeding through too much at once. Struggling with the balance now, I need to come up with some sort of formula.

I sped through a bunch of stuff early on but now I go back and revisit, take my time with stuff. Whizzed through stuff like the Death and Gorguts discogs knowing I wouldn't really absorb them until later, but I just wanted more exposure to the genre since I didn't really have much experience in DM at that point.

I see, yeah. Because I was buying all my music before I let albums digest first before delving further into an artists discography. Now I'm using Spotify the rules seem to have changed.

I bought Symbolic (after a quick check on Youtube) & listened to it obsessively for a week or so before moving on, then did the same with Human & then more recently with ITP. Then last week I got Spotify so abandoned ITP & downloaded TSOP. Now after only 2 listens I'm feeling ready to hear another Death album which doesn't seem right to me.
I guess that's the throwaway nature of modern listening habits & eventually I'll learn to strike a balance.

This album isn't nearly as replayable ad ITP/Human/Symbolic. Perhaps it's because of the similar structuring of every song

I wouldn't sweat it. There's so much stuff I jammed twice then moved on that I eventually circled back around to.

"This album isn't nearly as replayable ad ITP/Human/Symbolic. Perhaps it's because of the similar structuring of every song"
what do you mean? every song from these 4 albums has the same structure in a way, because they always go through a few passages until the chorus, then there's a bridge, a solo, and then the repeat of the whole first half with the chorus at the end. a couple of songs have special longer outros, and instrumental songs are more progressive, but that's about it. several riffs on this album are similar tho, I'll give you that.

Thinking about the songs this is probably my favorite, but yeah I don't often listen to the whole album, it gets boring quicker than human and symbolic in my opinion.

@vermillion
That makes no sense, how can you rate this so highly if it 'gets boring' under any circumstances, it's an album & shouldn't be treated like an individual collection of songs.

Yeah I adjusted it, this was my favorite for quite a while, but by now I prefer human and symbolic. They got more replay value and substance.
