I honestly didn't like that song all that much. Part of the reason why this isn't a 4.5 TBH.

I can't wait for Agalloch to drop a bomb that rivals their first 3 some day, I'm holding on to hope. Black Lake definitely best song on here.

I usually like repetitive BM, but for some reason, into the Painted Grey's repetitiveness just kills it for me. The Watcher's Monolith has fantastic structure, and that section right before the song goes into halftime and fades into ambiance is orgasmic.

Agalloch always waits four years between major releases. God damnit.

Ever since this album released I tend to forget about them until they announce something so it all works out haha.

I'm aware that comparing it to atmo BM as a genre, it's not that repetitive. However, I still feel strongly that it just doesn't jive very well with Agalloch's songwriting.

I think its the drums that ruin the repetition on this, they just sound so grating that hearing the same thing for very long starts to hurt.

@Mista It's because this isn't their primary commitment they've said it themselves. One of them is a professor at a pretty great school and they have families and stuff. Probably a fantastic reason to break up considering they kinda ran out of ideas for the new one imo but you never know right?

Also, I'm probably in the minority when I say this, but I despise the drum sound. It just feels like they were trying to hard to make it sound raw.

I agree completely Gmork. The drum sound on this album is sooooo bad. If they were mixed a little better, I would definitely dig Into the Painted Grey more.

@mista repetitive melodies are totally their thing so i don't really get what you're trying to say

The melodies are fine but the drums are way too loud and out front, ruins it a little, that's what I think he's saying and I totally agree.

While I'll agree they they've had some fantastic tracks in the past that use repetition in excess (i.e. In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion,) on Into the Painted Grey, the trems over the blast beat just doesn't do anything for me. The arpeggiated melodies that they have played in the past are the shit though.
