For shits and giggles, closers ranked:

Yeah like I said “Gospel” is amazing in its own right but it has some crazy competition among their closers. They’re super hard to rank but for me it’s something like (with ratings to show how close the contest is):
Mr. November (5/5)
Lucky You (5/5)
Hard to Find (5/5)
Vanderlyle (5/5)
About Today (5/5) (if that counts; I personally treat the last two songs on Cherry Tree as bonus tracks)
Sleep Well Beast (5/5)
Light Years (5/5)
Gospel (4.5/5)
Anna Freud (3.5/5)

Just noticed how Matt seemingly really likes the word 'ruffian'.

If this band just released a single song in their entire career and quit, one which would have summed up everything they've done it would have been Apartment Story

I dunno man, Apartment Story is only 3.5 material for me. I think Sorrow and Terrible Love would be better encapsulations.

It's actually my favourite song by them alongside Afraid of Everyone and Little Faith

Yeah I know you’re a big fan (when I started listening to The National, I read the threads in full for each album and you were always singing its praises).
Damn dude, Afraid and Faith are the two somewhat skippable tracks on HV for me (do like Afraid tho). We seem to like very different National songs, but at least we can agree that these guys are the shit.

Lol no, we don't like different songs. I love all of them! I just happen to love some of the songs you're not too keen on a hell lot. I'm always surprised when I go to National discussion threads and see which songs people consider weak. This is actually without question the band of the decade for me. Few come close. Fleet Foxes would have rivaled if they didn't take that long hiatus

Afraid of Everyone (alongside Terrible Love & Anyone's Guost) captures perfectly the anxiety I always associate HV with.
