Assuming you're not including Faustian Echos as a contender, Marrow is definitely the darkest album they've done. The Mantle is certainly bleak, but more grey than dark.

This is their best and probably their least dark effort.
They definitely changed styles with Serpent, they do with every single album.
Serpent was good but definitely a step down from the incredible Marrow, which isn't even as good as PF or Ashes.
