this is probably their best
in totally non-hostile terms, I wonder what sort of difference of perspective makes a lot of people think that this is distinctively weaker than some of their other records

Symbolic and Human have better songwriting, better riffs, better everything. It's not that this album is bad, in fact, it isn't, but it just doesn't stand as an all-time classic that some of their other releases are.

I consider symbolic and human to be 6/5s while this is a 4,5-5. I can jam the whole thing with ease and the technical skills are still amazing. It lacks the oomph of symbolic and human but “overactive imagination””trapped in a corner” and “the philosopher” are perfect songs imo

Yeah I'm the opposite, I'd say that ITP has way better songwriting/riffs/everything than Symbolic or Human or really any Death record (imo).
Still love the others, but nothing comes close to ITP for me.

^Happy to see those first two getting some love though. Of course I love the Philosopher, but it just seems like a lot of people neglect the others, especially Overactive Imagination.
