Idk about depressing.

well lyrically its about the environmental and sociological doom of the world, where basically everything gets destroyed, leaving little to no hope at all. i think thats kinda depressing

"no, he didn't." Says another 5er...
Beyhond sounding samey with not much songwriting dynamics, except in intensity, heaviness here is clearly relying mostly on drumms (which are brilliant btw)...overall I found it a bit too slow without being exactly doomy...and a bit riffless...I hope I'll let this thoughts sink with further listens.
Only got to Shrines and Fire. I guess I should do Destroyer.

Now you've lost me

I’m having to reset my expectations and embrace the greater emphasis on a consistent atmosphere. Ulcerate were formally about technicality and chaos for me, with EiF being their masterpiece and greatest example of that.
So far I’m sold on this new direction, could be working for me more-so than Destroyers did in that sense.

Each song walks around 2 or sometimes 1 note only, 80times. Production/ instrumental dynamics, therefore changing the intensity, they do it brilliantly I'd say.

Claiming there's not much songwriting is entirely dependent on what to you constitutes a "song" and what doesn't. This doesn't have any less songwriting as any other major extreme metal release I heard this year (or any other Ulcerate album for that matter). So I'm not sure where that critique comes from, unless you were expecting some rock-out-with-your-cock-out groove fare.
And lack of riffs...there's riffs abound afaic. Only not the "caught in a mosh" variety riffs tailor made for getting that ass moving...and again, Ulcerate hasn't really been taking that route after the debut, which admittedly was a far more immediate riffier affair than the subsequent records.

They often wrote songs around a single concept in the past already ie chasm of fire, end the hope, omens, vermis. Just this time every song is kinda like that.
Listen to Inversion again. Its got great dynamics imo. That ending riff gets teases a lot throughout the song without it being to obvious.

I can think of lots of reasons why someone might not like this but lack of riffs? idk bro

I mean this has way more dynamic song-writing than a lot of old school ‘2nd wave’ (or anything inspired by that era) black metal. Then what about doom? It completely depends on what you’re comparing it to, or what your definition and/or experience of dynamic or ‘samey’ song-writing actually is.
This nails a dense captivating atmosphere for me, something that requires significant song-writing restraint. You want development of course, but it needs to feel natural. Sometimes you can’t have it both ways, what’s needed is balance.

There are riffs like melodic high single chord leads, beautiful btw, hard to get those open chords, only a few cool palm muted here and there. I'm not aiming at a low rate on this. Just not totally sold upon 1st listen.

Not everything is going to sink in after a first listen so don't feel pressured to be "sold" on this right away. It took like 8 listens for me to love even the opener. Not sure what you mean by "songwriting dynamics" unless it's something like contrast within or between tracks? Because I reckon there's more of that here than on their previous two albums at least.

Songwriting here - each track has max two continuous notes, and they circle around that, changing the way they do it, in intensity and drumm paterns...which is super cool nonetheless...atmosphere is also nailed.
But yeah guys...I like to share first impressions..to see how they evolve and to learn a bit with you guys x)

"It took like 8 listens for me to love..." Idk, there are certain grower albums, but I don't feel this is one of them :'|
Daily useless comment: done.
Edit: damn page break...

by “continuous notes” do you mean each song has a couple of dominant motifs? If so that’s always been their style, establish a theme and have it mutate over the course of the song

I mean A to B, A to B, A to B, pretty slow and with cool little guitar and drumm progressions between them. Will be back tomorrow eh.
