this really wasn't ahead of its time tbh
I agree. It's a great album, ultimately, but the innovation/pretension ratio is laughably low. I don't think it would be half as revered with a normal title.

they borrowed a lot from the nation of ulysses but this is still one hell of a ride

agreed. but maybe it's not "ahead of its time" in the sense that it's actually innovative (bc i don't think it very much is). but i do think it deserves that phrase considering how many have followed them afterwards.
also i do think the pretentious album title is fitting - as is all the praise it has gotten, even if both are rather overblown.

you're probably right. i guess the blame should be put on ornette (that bastard!) - because of him, i expect a revolution from everything titled "the shape of... to come", rather unreasonably so, as you point out.
Well at least it's not titled Free Punk

yoooo i'd be interested in a "free punk" alb

@Futures have you heard nation of ulysses eps? They even have a song called "The Sound of Jazz to Come"... Other than that what about Fugazi - Red Medicine/End Hits, and Unwound - The Future of What/Repetition? True, there is no band that sounds exactly like Refused (at least before Refused), but mix the above ones, maybe add Rage Against the Machine (for aggression) and some dance interludes and there you go. Don't get me wrong, shit's still pretty original etc., but The Shape of Jazz to Come? Nah.
@Cyg yeah me too

because free-jazz/punk hybrids don't exist...
|
| |
they do but not in a 40 min double quartet quasi-jam format. at least i've never heard of one

call me a bigot but jazz-punk hybrids tend to be less than impressive imo
...unless u talking about the last 3 tracks on funhouse, of course.

this album is like a combination of: "a product of its time" and "right time; right place". a lot of variables and different sounds went into this making something that could only make sense when it did, and was dropped in such a climate that it struck just the right chord, with just the right people and so forth.
not tryna discredit it or anything, in fact, i may be doing the opposite!?

Not a big punk/hardcore guy by any means, so I have literally no idea what this album did for anything or why it's considered so ground breaking tbqh.
It just fucking rules and that's all that matters to me.
