Lot of folk have waited for this album for a ridiculous amount of time so I guess there's a lot of that, no matter if it's objectively good or bad, from any standard or imaginary point of view. The fact that they have finally released smth new is just reason enough to hold it high for many.

(Should I say, me included)

it works both ways. such a long time of wait also easily leads to lofty expectations and that enhances the feeling of disappoinment when the album inevitably fails to meet those expectations

'I dunno guys, this is the album that keeps on giving for me. I’m still spinning it on the daily and it’s not growing off me/burning out on me at all.'

Art is right.

Portishead and Massive Attack are good examples with their comebacks (Third and Heligoland). Third was amazing and very well received, whereas Heligoland got a lukewarm reception. It can go both ways I guess.

The comparison goes even further actually. Third did something radically different than the album that came 16 or so years earlier and it worked out wonderfully, while Massive Attack chose to do something similar to their older output and Heligoland was just a less successful version of what they did way better earlier.

I'm afraid this currently sits there for me. Not being a great reinvention but a so-so rehash of old ideas. Which isn't really satisfying especially after a 13 year wait. It creates a feeling of "is this all you could come up with"?

'Portishead and Massive Attack are good examples with their comebacks (Third and Heligoland). Third was amazing' (2)...

Third is undoubtedly the greatest comeback album of all time.

Third was (is!!!) ridiculously amazing, agreed.

It's been a while too... Let's hope they take their time and blow us away with Number Four as well!

I might prefer Third to Dummy (controversial, I know). It's close anyway, let's call it a wash. Yeah, I heard there might be more material, any recent updates?

I heard they are working on it. This was said (to Rolling Stone) in 2011 (!!!):

''Have you already started the new album?

No, we haven’t. I’m going to start in January, I don’t know when Beth’s gonna start or when Adrian [Utley] is gonna start, but I’m gonna get my head together for January basically to start writing. Historically that could mean fucking 10 years. [Laughs] We’re only ever going to release something that we feel comfortable with or else it’s not worth releasing basically.

So you are realistic about the timeline?

Of course, we’ll release it when it feels like we’ve got something to say. I think most probably any one of us would prefer to go and take up some van driving job than release an album that we didn’t feel comfortable about.''

I was initially sceptical this was sufficiently on-topic (like anyone cares), but given the length of time it'll likely take for it to be released, you can actually draw some parallels to Maynard & Co. Like I said, anything recent? Oh...

Thanks for the info regardless.

Haha exactly. It's totally on topic.

There's been nothing else on a new album as far as I know.

Oh wait, there's more (in 2015, on NME):

''Now, speaking to Rolling Stone, Barrow has said: “I am calibrating my brain to Portishead mode and got some ideas of what I want to do there — at long last.”''

And

''Last year, Portishead’s Adrian Utley revealed that the band members were “clearing our schedules” in order to work on their fourth album. Utley was speaking at By:Larm Festival in Oslo in February 2014. “We’re clearing our schedules so we can get on with it, otherwise it will be another 10 years,” he commented, referencing how busy individual members are with other projects. Utley added that he had recently discussed plans for a new LP with Barrow. “We were both really enthusiastic, and enthusiasm counts for a lot in Portishead world,” he said.''

That's only our years ago! Super mega recent!

If they need help in clearing their schedule, I'm available anytime. I'm sure their families/fellow musicians will disagree with the ruthless culling of a life outside of the project at hand, but it's for the best.

It is.

Although I'm always conflicted about this. They're currently sitting at an average of 4.9 for their entire discog for me. Which is insane of course. I'm super curious where they'll go next, but also scared about the possible result.

Maybe we should just have a little faith, aren't they making the right noises about not wanting to rush out anything less than perfect? Similar to Tool perhaps, and their fans seem pretty happy with this on the whole.

I say bring it on and screw the consequences, I need more Portishead in my life.
