im happy with their output (like such a good discography) and especially if it causes aaron that much strife wouldn't want to wish that on them

they recorded Birnam right at the end of the sessions and Aaron was totally outta juice. which makes sense why it sounds like he just woke up and is being recorded against his will, man that's a flat vocal performance

also almost every song on PH does the "last minute switch-up" format, it's a good one but you're kinda tired of it by the time Birnam rolls around lol

I literally do not remember a single second of Birnam Wood and that's how I feel about most of that album after Dorothy until Rainbow Signs shrug emoji

I mean Lilac Queen is top 3 on that album but otherwise kinda understandable

Yeah I'm genuinely not even trying to badmouth the album but hot damn the first half is a trillion times better than the 2nd

Lazy take. First half has almost all the rock bangers so it follows it's more memorable, but the album wouldn't carry half as much weight without Magic Lantern Days and Lilac Queen, not to mention Rainbow Signs. The whole p-p-point of Pale Horses is that its vision of decline is cluttered and attritional, which is part of why its second half skew towards washed out cuts with moments of intensity is much more convincing than this album's insistence on doing One Big Rock Song after another

Thank God justice for Magic Lantern Days finally. Great as Red Cow is, don’t tell me that D-Minor and Mexican War Streets match up to what Side B gets up to

And Birnam Wood is great, the exhausted delivery complements it real nice and the subdued first switch up into the “Would you take a bound up Isaac’s place” bit is lowkey onna the record highlights

Mexican War Streets is a career highlight and D-Minor is severely underrated and arguably one of their best lyrical songs, but sentiment seconded

I might be one of the few who actually prefers D Minor to MWS, the lyrics are just incredible. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying the second half loses steam (it does), I just happen to be so hooked on the lyrics and apocalyptic imagery that it almost doesn't really matter what they're even doing instrumentally lol.

I was living in Pittsburgh at the time PH came out so MWS is kind of special to me but D-Minor is pretty spectacular lyrically especially where it touches on the inadequacy of language to encapsulate concepts like love and God

I love the weariness of Birnam Wood, personally. I think it just really prepares the stage for Rainbow Signs well while cementing the impact of the records themes.

Birnam is great, it's got one of my favorite lines
