This is easily their best simply because it allows itself to truly feel emotion rather than cover in it heavy badassery like on SFTD

Tbh the only things that aren't gems (but are still really great) are "I Sat by the Ocean" and "Fairweather Friends"

"talktothehead they haven't really stuck to a core sound, like the stoner rock roots, after SFTD though. Lullabies was more atmospheric and radio-friendly at times, then Era Vulgaris was this strange industrial rock sounding record that polarized their fanbase. After the bluesy sleaze of TCV, Homme returned with this: his brilliant but different sounding sensitive singer-songwriter album. I have no idea what they'll sound like with their new one, but I'm sure it'll be fantastic."
I agree, but people seem to have the idea that their first 3 albums are their "true" sound, or at least the sound they should strive for, which doesn't make sense because they are all very different.

FullofSounds we can agree to disagree, to me Era Vulgaris might have the rawer, heavier qualities of their first three but it also gets into stranger, at times heavier territory than the more straightforward sound they had with like the debut.
talktothehead yeah we agree on this. Even if there was still a lot of stoner rock to the first three records, they're all pretty different and diverse like you said.

I'm very excited to see where they go from here tbh. I think it will be interesting. If it's the same as this, I'm not sure i'll be happy. I don't think that doing an album like this twice will net great results the second time.

It's hard to tell. Just based on their track record I think they will change it up again. The sound and lyrics of ...Like Clockwork seemed like a result of certain things that happened to Homme beforehand, like for Vampyre.

Yep. I think the thing with singer-songwriter albums for bands that aren't known for that, is, there's usually always a special reason for those albums existing. Usually it makes it more personal and deep, and having it be the unique album in the catalog just makes it all the better. If they did 2 or 3 albums like this, then I think we'd just look back at this as that "one pretty great" singer songwriter album
