I wouldn't call Gorguts a dissodeath band either. They have dissodeath albums, but they also did OSDM and TDM.

Yeah I guess I would consider gorguts more of a tech death band with disso elements. They dont just rely as heavily on dissonance as bands like dso or ulcerate

Eh, they’ve used a far above standard amount of textured dissonance, angular melody, and overall modernist classical sensibility in their music for the last 20 years when compared to a more typical tdm band that’s all about runs and string skip riffs. So, still dissodeath from my perspective. Kinda like saying DSO’s standard bm days or their newest album somehow make them not a dissonant band anymore. The only difference is Gorguts’ more standard stuff was still really excellent and most people don’t give a shit about DsO’s normy shit.

P. S. Portal is also pretty goated.

Can anyone give me some recs that maybe flew under my radar similar to this era of DsO (specifically Fas, this, Kenose, and Drought)?

Basically black metal with fuckin riffs? I know black metal is more about mood and interesting chord progressions and all that but I’m really starting to get burnt out on these guys even tho they’re one of my favorite bands of all time. Thy Darkened Shade was one a buddy of mine on discord told me to check out, also really need to get around to Portal… anything else I’m missing? I’m not as concerned with lyrical content and concepts and all that, I just want some black/death metal that will take me a few listens to even understand wtf is going on instrumentally lol

@hawks

I know I need to give Everything is Fire another shot. I might do a full Ulcerate run soon. I’ve only jammed their two newest and EIF.

old discussion but gorguts is way more dissonant than current day ulcerate, whose most recent few albums have been getting more and more melodic, imo they are hardly "dissodeath" anymore compared to something like portal. even this album is pretty melodic a lot of the time

people were saying gorguts in the other thread but I think it’s DSO… their output from 04-19 just cannot be fucked with no matter how much I love Gorguts
