Feels a bit frontloaded. First half is great but I’m having more trouble getting into most of the second half (Start a War and especially Gospel are good though).. Probably needs more time to grow.

So far, I’d say I slightly prefer Alligator to this.

I get why you'd say that but the second half will grow on you and hit you like a tonne of bricks. The 1-2 of Racing Like a Pro and Ada is extremely underrated in the National discography. Two of my very favourite songs with an amazing atmosphere

Also Apartment Story is the best National song. Anyone who disagrees can fight me

Yeah 2nd half is def a grower while first half is more immediate. Early favorites are Mistaken for Strangers, Brainy and Green Gloves. Then I have about four or five songs that I really like, but it’s too soon to rank them. Still growing.

Apt Story is prob one of my least favs here lol. Liable to change though.

Slow Show is really good, but good god is it overrated on this site imo. Another observation: just in general, the songs here feel too short and, as a result, slight at times. But that said, it kinda works here for the most part.

This is technically frontloaded I guess but like it’s only a really tiny dip in quality. The first 7 songs are like my favorite run of songs ever.

I'm going to ignore what you posted in that last comment and give you a chance to redeem yourself after the record has grown on you haha

Haha fair enough. The growing is in process. Each and every listen has brought me closer (third listen today).

I should probably just keep my mouth shut until it fully grows lol. Gonna eat my words later.

The shortness of these songs is part of what makes this such an amazing album. There’s absolutely nothing unnecessary in any of the songs.

Yeah the first 7 are best, maybe first 8

If you moved Ada to 9th it’d be the best 9 song run ever
