better than any old prog-rock album production-wise, why is anyone complaining about the production whatsoever, it's not unlistenable in the slightest, I prefer prog-rock Opeth to classic prog bands because they still have a slight metal edge whereas most classic prog is almost completely milquetoast through and through

You’ve gone overboard

lol, don't get me wrong, there's some classic prog that I like, for instance, I like some Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull, but for the most part, most of it is rather milquetoast like I said

"The only Opeth album that has a really bad mix, album is a damn sight better on vinyl."
Totally agree with the first part of that statement, wholeheartedly disagree with the second part. Have the vinyl and it sounds dull, muddy and just not good at all. Production on here is the only reason I don't have this at a 4, really drags it down.

Yeah I doubt vinyl sounds any different, especially considering "the album wasn't even mastered" or whatever Mikael means with that. If you want a chance at a better sounding Sorceress you could hunt down the surround mix but it's in a steep boxset and it's a bluray if I'm not mistaken, so good luck ripping it.
As for Heritage and PC, they were already mastered surprisingly well on CD so I doubt vinyl would be worth the hassle of... well, vinyl.
Also this album moderately slaps

mastering is almost always different for vinyl (analog) versus any kind of digital format

This is the only opeth album I never really feel like coming back to. Title track is cool, wilde flowers is solid, and the rest of the album has cool moments scattered throughout here and there

Don't they often just mean "slightly EQ'd for vinyl because it's all digital anyway" though?

sometimes yeah. the simple physical limitations of vinyl means that certain frequencies need to be filtered out which can be a good thing or a bad thing.

I've mostly stopped the risky bet of buying new vinyl, I recently tried again with the Draconian Times repress only to be greeted with "2011 remaster" slapped on the back of the package. That said I'd be glad to be proven wrong about this record, or any record really!

i cant really prove it with this one as the entire system that i listen to my records on isnt set up to play any kind of digital format.

My eyes weren’t ready for this level of absurdity, what the absolute fuck did I just read. My word. Firstly, since when was heaviness the barometer for all things good about music?
The production is ass, these tracks sounded beefy live but the recording nullifies any sense of heaviness. That’s before we get to the poor song-writing, (up for debate I guess).
P.S. I’d say King Crimson sound suitably heavy at times, if that’s what you’re looking for in a classic prog band.

oh i didn’t take it as such. I’d honestly like to do a side by side comparison between the vinyl lp and a digital counterpart

This album didn’t need to sound super heavy, just needed to have a good mix. Really hoping for a remaster of some kind in the future

hehehe salty Demon and mission is a resounding success, I've just always gravitated towards heavier music and/or more modern mixes, this is what I call a generational divide, but I digress, I can enjoy some classic prog when it's on, but I generally won't seek it out and listen for my own enjoyment, sorry buddy man
|

Gravitating towards heavier music is fine but to claim that this sounds better than most classic prog doesn’t really make much sense lol, lotsa stuff from back then stilll sounds superb and this def could sound better

this is just another case where the internet hates an album but I've encountered many people irl who have a lot of good things to say about the album, and have had good experiences with it
