First 42 seconds of The Wolf, creepy af Gira just singing over a light acoustic guitar.

Album will end up competing for best-of-decade status at the end of 2019

For sure, this still sounds monumental

Yeah I just re-listened and I might bump this up to #2 over Science Fiction. I still think Carrie & Lowell will end up taking #1 for me though, barring an insanely great release between now and 12/2019.

Finally ordered this on Vinyl. Pumped as hell for some reason.

TBK was a major letdown for me. All of the bloat and pomp but about 25% as interesting. I still 3.5'd it I think, though, even though I probably never listened to it after the 3rd or 4th time. The Glowing Man was even worse.
For me, this is the peak of everything/anything Swans. As I said before I currently have it slotted at #3 for my personal decade list, but this has the ability to leapfrog Science Fiction for #2 and, potentially, could even be #1 if Carrie & Lowell ever wears off of me (it probably won't though, that's one of the - if not the - prettiest/saddest album I've ever heard).

Carrie & Lowell and this are in my top favorite albums of the decade for sure, but best Swans is White Light.

I generally really enjoy what's going on here, but I also feel like it's unnecessarily bloated. I don't even think I'd ever have time to listen to one HALF of this in one sitting

I wish Lunacy was a better representation of the rest of the album

In what way? It's dark, repetitive, hypnotic, noisy. The only way it's not representative is that it's worse than everything else on the album

uhhhh wut. I prefer it because there's a semblance of structure and purpose, its eerie and brooding, it makes you feel like there's something big and dark coming. Which of course, is accurate. But some songs, like the title track, lose effectiveness when it's practically the same thin repeatedg for 32 consecutive minutes. At a certain point, the repetition and extreme length do it a disservice. Lunacy is just a damn well-written song. It hooks you, it sets the stage in an engaging way, but it's still far less accessible than an average song. During most of the songs on the second disc, it almost feels like the band forgot I was there and they fell asleep with loops turned on

I guess I should say half the songs on the second disc lol

Strange, I find Lunacy to be incredibly repetitive (as well as t/t) whereas everything on disc 2 always feels like it is working towards something. I'm not the first to say it, but the first few times they shout LUNACY is great, but by about the 10th time it loses its power and feels more cheesy than anything.
Which songs on disc 2 are you referring to? Disc 2 is vastly superior to 1, IMO, and basically a perfect album by itself.

This is their best reunion album, I love all the different soundscapes on here. Song for a Warrior, Avatar, and A Piece of the Sky are excellent.
