I prefer Mellon Collie ever so slightly but both are the hardest of 5s for me.

I’ve known Mellon Collie so long that I think a lot of the cheesiness has worn off - this however since it’s new to my ears is having a harder time. The songwriting here is less interesting too, for the most part.

Personally I find Mellon Collie more bombastic and cheesy-It's like Billy turned it up to 11 and went for broke, although like 95 percent of it works for me so I don't mind. Cupid De Locke, Beautiful and Lily spring to mind as being particularly cheesy.

This one is cheesier in that it has more generic 90s sounding stuff. The lyrics are also mega-cringe. But yeah like I said I probably overlook some of the cheesiness of Mellon Collie because of familiarity.

It’s sort of like how if I were to check out The Bends for the first time now it would probably be my second least favorite Radiohead album but because I got it earlier I established that emotional connection and is a 5.

This could just need some time to grow on me though.

The consistent sound of this trumps Mellon Collie - the more psychedelic passages are so good on this

Siamese Dream gives good ‘dream rock’

'The lyrics are also mega-cringe'

Life's a bummer when you're hummer buddy

They’re more snotty/bratty than Mellon Collie, I like them

He got more gothic/ye olde with his lyrics after this

Yeah Doof, I don’t mean to badmouth this too much, the sound is great for the most part there are just some major drawbacks. Like, Mayonaise is perfect instrumentally and melodically but when he cries “I JUST WANT TO BE MEEEEEEEEEE” I struggle to hold back my laughter.

“Bang bang you’re dead, hole in your head” does the same thing.

I guess for me overwrought meaningless “ye olde” lyrics are better than simple turn of phrase self-pitying.

I get that lyrics aren’t really all that important here anyways but they’re distractingly up front a lot of the time so I can’t ignore them.

The 'I just want to be me....when I can' is great imo. Conveys the whole point of the song imo. But each to their own on lyrics really.

Clay it’s not even the lyric itself so much as how he sings it. As a sentiment it’s fine but again, a very standard 90s one - and cheesy.

I prefer Melancholy although I also heard that one first, both a long time ago mind. Edit: didn’t realise this was a 3.5 for me, presumed it was a 4.

You have to picture Corgan as an oversized baby meets egomaniac with the lyrics

They’re very Billy

Silly Billy

Doof the problem this is clearly trying to be a “feels” album in parts (not every song is doing that) so for me when the lyrics don’t sell the emotion authentically that holds it back.

Again though this is still a great album, just a flawed one.

The whole album is nostalgic joy for me, so I can’t really remove the memories of spinning this at full volume while playing table tennis with my brother in our garage

As a kid this was my favourite album for a year or two, guess it just channels that teenage thing

Yeah like I said above if I had had this album say 5-6 years ago aged 15 it would probably be a 5.

I’d think so - I mean it’s better than ‘Loveless’ ;P

Well fwiw I enjoyed Loveless less at first than I’m enjoying this now - so there’s hope! :-P

The emotional honesty in Billy's vocals and lyrics is one of the main turn ons of this for me tbh

Expressions of passion are generally pithy and direct and the simplicity is part of their beauty imo
