Some people say Rush did that with Clockwork Angels

What an absolutely, monumental, powerful, robust, magnificent fucking MASTERPIECE that Fear Inoculum.
13 years well worth the wait.
Greatest American rock band of all time.

"Some people say Rush did that with Clockwork Angels"
Clockwork is a great album but better than 2112 to Moving Pictures era Rush? Hell naw.

Your Lateralus/Blackwater Park math certainly felt unconventional.

Ha! I did see your original comment and I was gonna say that the closest thing we have to a consensus on the quality of the album is the average ratings.
Gira is a contender even though his highest rated album is from 1996 when he was 42.

Best Swans is White Light or Soundtracks.

This album is gorgeous. Not a descriptor I would use for much of Tool's back catalogue but feel it applies here. Parts of this, especially Maynard's vocal deliveries, feel unusually lush and almost tender. The lack of aggressive vocals is feeling more fitting over time. (He could probably still stand to go full out on 7empest though.)

Soundtracks is top three easily, but White Light? Hmm...

Maybe composers from the classical era, or jazz musicians? It's not too common in rock/pop I'd say.

"Maybe composers from the classical era, or jazz musicians?"
I'm not familiar with classical composers, but even jazz musicians tend to peak sometime between their early 30's and mid-40s. Later than rock/pop musicians (who tend peak between their mid-20s and mid-30s) but not by a whole lot. Being young-ish does have its benefits in relation to being aware of what's contemporary and keeping pace with it.
