The way the overall riff structures slowly fall apart into unintelligibility (up to Nostrum) while the guitar solos become more and more locked-in to the rhythm underneath them throughout the record (Nostrum, again as the culminating reference point) easily makes this their most cerebral/structured record - yeah, over Catch 33 - that album forces you to think about its experimentation as a surface quality, where this is baked in to the dna.

Combined with their striving to pair that hyper-intention with recording the whole thing live in the studio to add a level of messy visceral energy…idk, for me this record is LITERALLY the labyrinth they’ve been poking at since Nothing. A bit impenetrable, always imposing, sometimes a frustrating listen if I just wanna get some immediacy (Clockworks sometimes tricks me into thinking the record has finally “clicked” in that way, but the haze always sets in by track 3…and Koloss isn’t going anywhere if I need that haha)…but damn does this floor me when I get pulled in.

Like today, which made me write this. I’m sorry lol

Ngl I accepted a year or two ago that we would never hear from them again as Meshuggah so I kinda accepted that but if that ends up being incorrect I will not complain

I guess I just don’t ‘get’ this band.

Like that just sounds like a lazy breakdown but not in 4/4 and on 8 strings to me.
