"Saying a band's debut HAS to be more inspired than their Xth album after it, is stupid."

It's not stupid if it's true. Steph even went on record saying he struggled to actually get into these songs, and the album has been out for like six months now and they are still struggling to put tracks from the album into their setlists, which wasn't the case at all with Koi/DE.

t/t and rubicon were class live, I agree though only playing 2 songs from their latest is a bit of a reflection on their perception of its quality

Yeah, looking back now you can make the argument adrenaline is just ever so slightly better than your average nu-metal album, but at the time of it's release that was not the case at all.

When Adrenaline dropped there really wasn't that much nu-metal out there, especially some with that understated reggae influence. Deftone's set out to push a different sound, and it went on to influence a bunch of later nu-metal acts, which Deftone's then ended up successfully distancing themselves from.

Gore just feels like a standard issue Deftone's record to me, and even the minor attempts at experimentation (Phantom Bride) just aren't that successful..

It sounds crazy saying this now, but for the time Adrenaline was a lot more creative and experimental than this. Even if you hate it, at least it stands out in there discog as a unique album and actually sounds like a band clicking 100% musically with each other.

Step didn't like White Pony all that much either. Does that mean anything, when it's their most influental album ? No. Hell every band member hates SNW (for a different reason) but it's their best so ...

Also I was talking generally about saying that inspiration is the greatest in one's debut art is very subjective, which you contradicted.

Everyone in the band except Steph has openly said they really like Gore, and so do a lot of other people. He even also came around later.

From what I understand, White Pony (along with AtF) was by far the band's favorite album to make. And how is the rest of that related to what we're talking about? And no I didn't contradict myself anywhere lol. Hard to have this convo with you in the first place since you're so hell bent on this being way better then Adrenaline.

“When I gave ‘the interview’, I was just saying that, in the beginning, I wasn’t too inspired by what was going on. I didn’t elaborate. The emotions tied to that statement were really all around one song called “Hearts/Wires.” Once I got over my bs about it and dug into it, I found a place in it where I like it and have fun. It ended up one I liked the most. It’s so funny how things get spun out.”

Carpenter struggled to get into the writing of only one song. When he was asked if he liked Gore, he said this;

“Oh yeah! I went eight records before I had any kind of issue. But I’ve already lived through two records in the past where somebody else didn’t enjoy them at all. For me to finally hit a wall, I think I last pretty good, because I’ve seen other people already buckle.”

I'm not hell bent, man. You didn't contradict yourself, you contradicted my aforementioned statement. And yes, Carpenter didn't initially like White Pony either.

@Sweeney The amount of Gore tracks on their setlists since it's release says otherwise.

Is it me or do Steph and Chino like to low-key take shots at each other?

He calls their s/t and SNW the bands dark days, so yes, he doesn't like their S/T

Well, he always said it was the beginning of the dark days, but I'm not sure if he outright hates it.

Wasn't the s/t like really expensive to make? Mostly because of them just hanging out in the studio while they were supposed to be actually making the album?

i think snw might've been the most expensive. there was a few long delays and they ended up using three different producers all together, where every other album they only used one.

snw definitely sounds "expensive"

the first time I heard the album, when Hole in the Earth kicked in it was like hi-fi overload

So would you say SNW is their best production-wise?

I can get down with that, with White Pony being a close second. I like it on DE/Koi too but they are just obnoxiously loud imo.

i mean, on a technical level production-wise SNW is pretty much perfect

personally though i prefer the sound of White Pony, Diamond Eyes & s/t

though Combat may be my favorite Deftones song - production, performance & song-wise

KNY is their best produced record tbh.
