imo they used to be nu metal (Adrenaline and ATF) and soon as White pony came out they evolved and pushed out of a dying genre.

Bands associated with nu metal derive influence from a variety of diverse styles, including electronica/electronic music, funk, glam rock, gothic rock, grunge, hardcore punk, hip hop, industrial rock, jazz, post punk and synthpop. Also, nu metal derives influence from multiple subgenres of heavy metal including rap metal, funk metal and thrash metal.

The lyrics of many nu metal bands focus on pain and personal alienation rather than traditional heavy metal themes.

Taken from Wikipedia. Just because they sound different from the rest of the genre, it doesn't mean that they are not still in the genre.

all im gonna say is, while they pushed the boundaries of the genre, they are still nu metal. i think if people didnt attach such negative connotations to the term 'nu metal', no one would have a problem with calling Deftones nu metal

"Just because they sound different from the rest of the genre, it doesn't mean that they are not still in the genre."

That's a good point Maniac but I wasn't saying that the Deftones were NEVER Nu-Metal, I was saying they are no longer nu-metal, nor is that the main genre that they should be lumped into, do you not agree?

I'd say they still have enough of a Nu-ish sound to be called Nu metal.

I said my piece about that. Whether people accept it or not, I don't care.

but anyway, I am up to 720 words. I think I am going to act like a music band and say that I think this will be my best work to date.

alt metal is the same as nu metal. people start thinking that nu metal only has one sort of sound. it is all the same genre, in the fact that is is several genres associated with metal.

thats the thing though. alt metal is basically the genre which fans lump the 'progressive nu metal' bands into because they dont like the negative connotations of the 'nu metal' tag

but this discussion is endless, gonna stop now

Whatever genre different folks think they are, they are undeniably an awesome band.
