I'm not an adventurous listener and I was a bit surprised by the hoopla. Probably the most the difficult track to appreciate (that I learned to love) was the title track.

First Radiohead album I remember being released was HTTF, but I did approach them in a methodical and vaguely chronological order (sort of), by that I mean my early RH experiences were The Bends / OKC and I peeked Pablo / My Iron Lung before moving forward.
This was a shock to the system, but I liked at least a portion of it immediately. Something compelled me to continue, possibly the cost aspect / ‘physical-age perseverance’ that came with the territory back then. The moment this eventually clicked in full changed my life, so I’ll always be grateful.

It was shit. Everyone thought so but then arty wankers stuck their oar in and the rest is history.

They got uppity because OK Computer was a genuine art rock masterpiece that turned the tables on critical ‘insight’
When Kid A was released it was clearly arse but the critics felt validated.
You speak to 70% of people who were around when all this was happening and it’s
1. Bends
2. OKC
3. Pablo Honey
Or variations of that.

I don’t doubt it. Unfortunately some people still think like that. History proved that the minority, or the ‘art wankers’ were right I reckon.

Nah. They are like, shaping your reality man and belittling your own individual consensus man.

It was a necessary bridge towards better things, a bridge that some people failed to cross. Nostalgic vibes only now (even that has waned over the years for me).

The bends is still a cherished album.
Listen to it now and it’s still amazing.
It’s only because we all stream, consume, absorb have nothing which is genuinely awe inspiring, unique and original created in this fettered hole of social media superficial digital age apathy that we feel we can sniff at by gone glories.
When it comes to guitar based, alt rock records there is not a lot that comes close to the bends.

Yeah, you’re right actually. The internet has helped me realise there are better albums than The Bends.

Bends is still good, not as timeless sonically as OKC onward maybe but Just, Telex, title track, Iron Lung & a couple of others still hang pretty well with their best stuff on the later albums

acceptable explanation of why everything now sounds like shit
not a convincing refutation of the bends always having been a middle of the road record

There’s so much good music coming out now though
